The critical role played by entrepreneurship in driving economic development and job creation is increasingly understood. But even now, in the emerging “New Economy”, its potential is often not fully recognised and supported by policymakers. In terms of social cohesion, too, entrepreneurship can play an important role, allowing some of those people otherwise marginalised from the labour market to create their own opportunities to participate in economic life.

The authors argue that the impact of FDI on entrepreneurial activity depends on different natures of capital flow and entrepreneurial motivation and relates to the quality of institutional environment. First, the roles of inward and outward FDI are examined in connection with the new firm creation by opportunity- and necessity-motivated entrepreneurs. Second, the integrated influences of (inward/outward) FDI and governance quality (GQ) on (opportunity/necessity) entrepreneurship are tested.

Renewable energy is shifting from the fringe to the mainstream of sustainable development. Past donor efforts achieved modest results but often were not sustained or replicated, which leads now to greater market orientation. Markets for rural household lighting with solar home systems, biogas, and small hydro power have expanded through rural entrepreneurship, government programs, and donor assistance, serving millions of households. Applications in agriculture, small industry, and social services are emerging. Public programs resulted in 220 million improved biomass cook stoves.

Fourth, this study applies new methodologies which have never been applied to emerging markets. For instance, Chapter 5 explores the determinants of risk-adjusted mutual fund performance using multidimensional regression in addition to the common approach, which is to use a zero-cost trading strategy. This alternative methodology can explore several factors simultaneously while controlling the effect between one and another. Using the two methods allows us to examine determinants of fund performance statistically and economically and it provides more meaningful results.
