Valproic acid (VPA) is a relatively safe drug widely used for the treatment of epileptic seizures and mania in bipolar disorder, as well as the prevention of migraine headaches. Here, we present a case of VPA-induced pancreatitis in a patient with vascular dementia, epileptic seizures, and psychiatric symptoms. He had no distinctive abdominal symptoms.

The 3’ untranslated region (3’UTR) of mRNA is the binding target of microRNA and RNA binding proteins. Their interactions regulate mRNA level in specific subcellular regions and determine the intensity of gene repression. The mutations in the coding region of voltage-gated sodium channel alpha 1 subunit gene, SCN1A, were identified in epileptic patients and confirmed as causative factors of epilepsy.

Cumulating evidence from rodent models points to a pathophysiological role of inflammatory signaling in the epileptic brain with Toll-like receptor-4 signaling acting as one key factor. However, there is an apparent lack of information about expression alterations affecting this pathway in canine patients with epilepsy.

Low-grade glioma (LGG) is a relatively rare type of brain tumour. The use of antidepressant, sedative and anti-epileptic drugs can reflect the burden of the disease. While epilepsy is well-described in patients with LGG, less is known about depression and anxiety.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is now a candidate therapy for children with acute respiratory failure. The successful outcome in this case resulted from the central ECMO, which enabled “lung rest” and adequate cerebral blood flow. In skilled ECMO facilities, early implementation of ECMO would give some advantages to patients such as the one presented here.

Seizures in up to one third of children with epilepsy may not be controlled by the first anti-epileptic drug (AED). In this study, we describe multiple AED usage in children attending a referral clinic in Uganda, the factors associated with multiple AED use and seizure control in affected patients.

Epilepsy is one of the most common and important neurological disorders among children especially in developing countries. Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is an intracellular protozoan capable of forming cysts in the brain of chronically infected humans. Moreover, the larvae of Toxocara canis (T. canis) can locate in the central nervous system leading to several neurological disorders. This study was undertaken to identify the prevalence and risk factors of toxocariasis and toxoplasmosis in children with idiopathic epilepsy.

Epilepsy is one of the most well-known neurological conditions worldwide. One-third of adult epileptic patients do not respond to antiepileptic drugs or surgical treatment and therefore suffer from the resistant type of epilepsy. Stem cells have been given substantial consideration in the field of epilepsy therapeutics.

Exact evidence about incidence of sleep disorders in patients with epilepsy is not available, but it is supposed, that the amount is higher in patients with epilepsy than in general population. For example patients with partial epilepsy have twice higher appearence of sleep disorders as in healthy group (39% vs 18%) (Bazil, 2003). According to this study higher presence of sleep disorders did not correlate with antiepileptic therapy. According to Foldvary-Schaefer (2002) patients with epilepsy have problems with initialization of sleep and have worse quality of sleep.

Intracranial infection (abscess) - usually staphylococci or streptococci. Cranial surgery performed to open and drain abscess. Epilepsy - Cranial surgery to remove the epileptic focus for patients whose epilepsy cannot be controlled by drug therapy. Skull fractures - for depressed fracture or fracture with loose fragments. Cranial surgery necessary to elevate depressed bone and/or remove fragments.

Antifolate Drugs A large number of epileptics, who are receiving long-term therapy with phenytoin or primidone, with or without barbiturates, develop low serum and red cell folate levels. The exact mechanism is unclear. Alcohol may also be a folate antagonist, as patients who are drinking spirits may develop megaloblastic anemia that will respond to normal quantities of dietary folate or to physiologic doses of folic acid only if alcohol is withdrawn. Macrocytosis of red cells is associated with chronic alcohol intake even when folate levels are normal.

In Ménière's disease, the direction of the fast phase is variableVertigo may be a manifestation of a migraine aura (Chap. 15), but some patients with migraine have episodes of vertigo unassociated with their headaches. Antimigrainous treatment should be considered in such patients with otherwise enigmatic vertiginous episodes. Vestibular epilepsy, vertigo secondary to temporal lobe epileptic activity, is rare and almost always intermixed with other epileptic manifestations.
