Essential calculus

This fifth edition of ‘Higher Engineering Mathematics’ covers essential mathematical material suitable for students studying Degrees, Foundation Degrees, Higher National Certificate and Diploma courses in Engineering disciplines. In this edition the material has been re-ordered into the following twelve convenient categories: number and algebra, geometry and trigonometry, graphs, vector geometry, complex numbers, matrices and determinants, differential calculus, integral calculus, differential equations, statistics and probability, Laplace transforms and Fourier series.

Ebook "Polymer physics" introduces the reader to the fascinating field of polymer physics. It is intended to be utilized as a textbook for teaching upper level undergraduates and first year graduate students about polymers. Any student with a working knowledge of calculus, chemistry, and physics should be able to read this book. The essential tools of the polymer physical chemist or engineer are derived in this book without skipping any steps.

Although the results of many recent research impacts studies support the view that investments in agricultural research continue to generate attractive rates of return, some people are uncomfortable with the limitations of the economic framework. Their concern is understandable, because economic rate-of-returns analysis is, in some ways, poorly suited for evaluating an activity (agricultural research) whose primary outputs (technological innovations) are essentially a means of achieving broader welfare goals that cannot easily be measured, much less valued.

This paper descrlbes how meanings are represented in a semantic grammar for a fragment of English in the logic programming language Prolog. The conventions of Definite Clause Grammars are used. Previous work on DCGs with a semantic component has used essentially first-order formulas for representing meanings. The system described here uses formulas of the typed ~-calculus.

This book is a final year undergraduate text on stochastic processes, a tool used widely by statisticians and researchers working, for example, in the mathematics of finance. The book will give a detailed treatment of conditional expectation and probability, a topic which is essential as a tool for stochastic processes. Although the book is a final year text, the authors have chosen to use exercises as the main means of explanation for the various topics, hence the course has a strong self-study element.

The mere thought of having to take a required calculus course is enough to make legions of students break out in a cold sweat. Others who have no intention of ever studying the subject have this notion that calculus is impossibly difficult unless you happen to be a direct descendant of Einstein. Well, I’m here to tell you that you can master calculus. It’s not nearly as tough as its mystique would lead you to think. Much of calculus is really just very advanced algebra, geometry, and trig. It builds upon and is a logical extension of those subjects.

This is a book on linear algebra and matrix theory. While it is self contained, it will work best for those who have already had some exposure to linear algebra. It is also assumed that the reader has had calculus. Some optional topics require more analysis than this, however. I think that the subject of linear algebra is likely the most significant topic discussed in undergraduate mathematics courses. Part of the reason for this is its usefulness in unifying so many different topics. Linear algebra is essential in analysis, applied math, and even in theoretical mathematics.

This book is partly based on lectures I gave at NUI Galway and Trinity College Dublin between 1998 and 2000. It is by no means a comprehensive guide to all the mathematics an engineer might encounter during the course of his or her degree. The aim is more to highlight and explain some areas commonly found difficult, such as calculus, and to ease the transition from school level to university level mathematics, where sometimes the subject matter is similar, but the emphasis is usually different.

This book is based on lectures delivered over the years by the author at the Universit´e Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, at the University of Stuttgart, and at City University of Hong Kong. Its two-fold aim is to give thorough introductions to the basic theorems of differential geometry and to elasticity theory in curvilinear coordinates. The treatment is essentially self-contained and proofs are complete.

This chapter contains reference material which you should have met before. It is here both to remind you that you have, and to collect it in one place, so you can easily look back and check things when you are in doubt. You are aware by now of just how sequential a subject mathematics is. If you don't understand something when you rst meet it, you usually get a second chance. Indeed you will nd there are a number of ideas here which it is essential you now understand, because you will be using them all the time. So another aim of this chapter is to...
