Syzygium boisianum (Gagnep.) Merr. & L.M.Perry, locally named Tram bois, is widely distributed in primary or secondary forests of Vietnam, Thailand, and China. [6] For the first time, the current report provides information on chemical compositions in essential oil of S. boisianum leaves, collected from the northern part of central Vietnam. The obtained oil was also used to assess its antibacterial effects. The biological potential is highlighted by the molecular docking study.

In Vietnam, there was a report in 1996 on the chemical composition of the essential oils from the leaves and flowers of two cultivars of A. sinensis. Unfortunately, at that time, the authors were not able to investigate the root oil of these plants (Nguyen Xuan Dung et al., 1996). In the present study, we report on the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oils obtained from the roots, flowers, fruits, and a mixture of leaves and stems of A. sinensis cultivated in Hung Yen province, Vietnam.

The chemical composition, antioxidant properties and antibacterial activities of different extracts (water, ethanol, acetate ethyl and hexane) and essential oil from Platycladus orientalis leaves were analysed in this study. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation, and its chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

The essential oils of Actinolema macrolema Boiss. (Apiaceae) were obtained by hydrodistillation in the first 3 (sample A) and the following 3 h (sample B) from crushed fruits and dried leaves (sample C), which were subsequently analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Overall, 64 components were characterized, representing 93% of the leaf oil. Thirty components were characterized from the fruit oil representing 95% of the first fraction and 90% of the second fraction consecutively.

Laggera tomentosa Sch. Bip. ex Oliv. et Hiern (Asteraceae), an endemic Ethiopian medicinal plant, is traditionally used to treat various ailments. Previously, the chemical constituents of the essential oil (EO) of its leaves and inflorescence were documented. However, no data about the chemical compositions of other parts of the EOs of the plant have been reported to date. Moreover, there are no previous biological activity reports on any parts of the EOs of this plant.

In Viet Nam, leaves of the plant are used to treat aching tendons, polio, and enteritis, while the roots are used for cough and malaria [31]. As part of our continuing efforts to identify readily-available essential oils for control of mosquitoes, we have assessed the essential oil from leaves of Vitex negundo (Table 1) growing in the wild in central Viet Nam for larvicidal action against Ae. aegypti.

The major component of Eucalyptus globulus is 1,8-Cineole (Eucalyptol) and has been recognized as a high ovipositional repellent and mild mosquito feeding repellent [8]. Chemical instability, volatility, propensity for oxidation and poor water solubility of essential oils make them inconvenient for extensive use [9]. Cymbopogon winterianus, commonly known as citronella, is native to the tropical and subtropical areas, consisting of citronellol, citronellal, and geraniol as its major compounds [10]. Cymbopogon oil has been proven to exhibit low acute toxicity in laboratory animals [11].

Chemical composition of the essential oil from leaves of Callicarpa arborea roxb. growing in Vietnam
The essential oil from the leaves of Callicarpa arborea Roxb. growing wild in Viet Nam, was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry. The major constituents of leaves of C. arborea were β-selinene (23.9 %), arturmerone (17.5 %) and α-copaene (8.9 %), with lesser concentrations of caryophyllene oxide (4.9 %) and ar-turmerol (3.9 %). The chemical composition of this essential oil sample is being reported for the first time.

The antioxidant activity of essential oils from leaves of Piper betle L. (T) and Cleistocalyx operculatus L. (V) and aerial parts of Ageratum conyzoides L. (H), indigenously grown in Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam, is investigated. The quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) model comprising 4-hydroxy-chromene-2H-one and its 26 derivatives is used to predict the radical scavenging activity of T, V, and H. The radical scavenging activity of the oils is experimentally determined with DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) via IC50 values.

In this study, we optimized conditions of extraction of essential oil from lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) stalks and leaves, using steam distillation device having an extent of 25 ÷ 30 kilograms of material per batch and approaching industrial scale. Using response surface methodology (RSM) with three factors that affect to the volume of essential oil obtained (mL/kg): material size (mm), water/material ratio (L/kg) and distillation time (minute). In the optimal condition of lemon grass essential oil distillation using steam distillation at 5.66 L water to 1 kg sample, 10.
