  • The success of most crop improvement programs depends on variability and heritability of desirable traits. An investigation was carried out during kharif 2016 at Botanical garden, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, India to assess the extent of variability generated by hybridization and to estimate the heritability and genetic advance as percent of mean for seed cotton yield and its component traits in F2 generation of cross QTP 16 × ASa 151. The segregating population thus obtained was evaluated for eight quantitative traits.

  • Genetic improvement of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is to a certain extent limited by a poor knowledge of genetic variability. Estimation of variability is highly important and is always considered as the first step in any crop improvement programme. With this in view, the current study was planned to assess the variability in F 1 seedlings of crosses made between eight cassava genotypes in Line x Tester method.

  • Ninety-three early generation sugarcane clones were evaluated for different morphological and juice quality characters among early generation sugarcane clones. Highest genotypic coefficient of variance (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variance (PCV) were recorded for Number of millable cane (NMC) and single cane weight respectively. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of means was observed for germination percent, NMC/hectare, cane height and inter node length. It indicated that direct selection of those traits would be effective.

  • The experiment was conducted in experimental Farm, Regional Research Station, Anand Agricultural University from July to November 2018toestimate the extent of variability present in rice genotypes with respect to yield and its component traits. The estimates of genotypic and phenotypic variances for the characters like plant height, effective tillers per plant, number of grains per panicle, grain yield per plant, straw yield per plant, harvest index and 1000 grain weight, genotypic variance contributed larger in phenotypic variance.

  • The present investigation was carried out at rice research farm ofBihar Agricultural University, Sabour (Bhagalpur), Bihar in kharif, 2019 to assess the extent of genetic variability for yield and yield related traits and to estimate heritability and genetic advance in rice genotypes for drought tolerance. The analysis of variance revealed highly significant variation among the genotypes for all the traits studied, under both the environments. The maximum phenotypic and genotypic variance was exhibited by the traits viz., leaf area and root biomass under both the environments.
