Gout is one of arthritis diseases resulting from high levels of plasma uric acid. Screening of medicinal plants for analgesic and an-hyperuricemic effects is necessary to prevent and treat gout disease. Homalomena has been widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of bone diseases. Homalomena pierreana is a newly discovered rare species found in Vietnam.

In this study, we investigated some conditions affecting the extraction of total carotenoids from R. mucilaginosa using environmentally friendly chemicals: cell disruption conditions with organic acids combined with ultrasound-assistant method, using ethanol and petroleum ether solvents to replace acetone in the process of extracting total carotenoids to obtain a benign product, easy to apply in food.

In this study, the antidengue virus activity of the ethanol extract from the leaves and twigs of E. cyathophora on four virus serotypes DENV1-DENV4 was examined. The result showed that the ethanol extract displayed antidengue activity on DENV1-4 with PRNT50 values of 15.625-62.5 µg/mL. This extract was fractionated to the n-hexane and ethyl acetate fractions.

Zoanthid is a potential natural resource with many biological activities, such as antioxidant, antiviral, antiinflammatory, and cytotoxic activity. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of 70% ethanol crude extract and dichloromethane fraction from Zoanthus vietnamensis. The total polyphenol content of ethanol and dichloromethane extracts were 19.36 ± 1.37 and 24.95 ± 0.63 mg GAE/g extract, respectively.

This study aimed to extract and evaluate some properties and the capability of phenolic components from shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.) peels for usage as fish preservative. It was found that shallot peels extracted twice with 70 % ethanol solvent, within 60 minutes, at 60 oC and the ratio of solid/liquid 1/20 (g/mL) gave highest polyphenol and flavonoid yields. Total polyphenol content and total flavonoid content of the extract were 224.34±5.66 mg GAE/g DW and 255.11±4.35 mg QE/g DW, respectively.

This thesis documents a research program in which Australian grown Danshen extracts and related bioactive compounds have been demonstrated to be effective in scavenging free radicals, namely ROS generation, in a cell free system and NADPH oxidase derived superoxide (O2-) generation in vascular tissue (rat aorta). Danshen extracts, both aqueous and ethanol, and their active compounds (Tanshinone IIA, Salvianolic Acid B and Danshensu) demonstrated anti-oxidant activity however findings exhibited stronger activity in a cell free system than in the aortic vascular tissue.

The main objective of this study was to confirm and estimate the algal inhibiting effects of the ethanol and ethyl acetate E. fortunei extracts at concentrations of 500 mg.L- in some natural water samples collected from Hoan Kiem and Lang Lakes. Thiol-functionalized SBA-15 silicas have been directly synthesized by cocondensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)-1-propanolthiol (TSPT) under hydrothermal condition. Mesoporous structure was obtained after the surfactant removal by Soxhlet and reflux ethanol extraction. These materials were characterized by means of powder X-ray diffraction, isotherms of nitrogen adsorption/desorption, thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.
