Euryale ferox

Euryale ferox Salisb., an annual aquatic plant, is the only species in the genus Euryale in the Nymphaeaceae. Seeds of E. ferox are a nutritious food and also used in traditional Chinese medicine (Qian Shi in Mandarin). The molecular events that occurred during seed development in E. ferox have not yet been characterized. In this study, we performed transcriptomic analysis of four developmental stages (T1, T2, T3, and T4) in E. ferox seeds with three biological replicates per developmental stage to understand the physiological and biochemical processes during E. ferox seeds development.

Aquatic Euryale ferox Salisb. is an economically important crop in China and India. Unfortunately, low yield limitations seriously hinder market growth. Unveiling the control of seed size is of remarkable importance in improvement of crops. Here, we generated a new hybrid line (HL) with larger seeds by crossing South Gordon Euryale and North Gordon Euryale (WT) which hasn’t been reported before.

The study showed that E. ferox tended to have highest tissue concentrations of N and P in the leaf parts while the less soluble Fe, Mn and intermediately soluble Zn exhibited greater concentrations in roots than in shoots. Thus, E. ferox can also be proved to be a better option as an alternative crop to include it in cropping system mode under field condition to replenish the exhausted nutrients such as N, P and Zn by the cultivation of other cereal crops.

Fox nut (Euryale ferox Salisb,) is an important non-cereal staple aquatic food crop, commercially cultivated in Eastern Indo-Gangetic Plains (EIGP) and thereby supports the livelihood of more than 2 million resource poor farmers. Its traditional method of cultivation and post-harvest handling depends on wisdom of the farmers, particularly the fishermen communities. Shrinking water bodies are major threat for sustaining the production potential in traditional methods of cultivation.

Makhana or gorgon nut (Euryale ferox) is an aquatic crop belongs to Nymphaeaceae family and is grown in some districts of north Bihar. The present study was conducted in two leading makhana producing districts, Darbhanaga and Madhubani of Bihar. The main objective of the investigation was to assess the costs and returns from cultivation of makhana in the study area. The results revealed that on an average the cost of cultivation of Makhana was estimated to be Rs. 57370.50/ha. The share of variable cost in total cost of cultivation was found 81.80 % and remaining 18.

A field trial was conducted to study the climate change effects on quality makhana production at ICAR-RCER, Research Centre on Makhana during 2016-2017. The objectives of the study were developing new makhana production strategies to secure sustainable production under climate change or various weather conditions. High temperature and reduced humidity resulted in production of rather smaller nuts and leaves. The results revealed that makhana was a photo insensitive crop and its growth and development were markedly changed with the change of climates.

Hạt của quả chín đã phơi hay sấy khô của cây Khiếm thực (Euryales ferox Salisb.), họ Súng (Nymphaeaceae). Mô tả Hình cầu, đường kính 5 - 8 mm, phần lớn là hạt vỡ.
