Eutrophication potential

In this paper, life cycle assessment of biodiesel production and use was applied to measure the environmental performance of biodiesel produced from Jatropha oil and WCO under Viet Nam conditions. Some main emissions, such as CO2, NOx, PM, CH4, VOC and land use, were computed through a cradle-to-grave analysis.

The LCA covered several different environmental impact categories; global warming, acidification, eutrophication, ozone layer depletion, photooxidant formation and resource use as well as toxicological impact categories. In addition the results were weighted using two different weighting methods; Ecotax 02 and Eco-Indicator 99. The results showed different patterns regarding where in the life cycle the main potential environmental impact can be seen.

Large lakes are important because of their size and ecological distinctiveness, as well as their economic and cultural value. Optimal management of them requires a proper understanding of anthropogenic impacts, both on the lake ecosystems, as such and on the services they provide for society. The specific structural and functional properties of large lakes, e.g. morphology, hydrography, biogeochemical cycles, and food-web structure, are all directly related to their size.
