  • We introduce a novel semi-automated metric, MEANT, that assesses translation utility by matching semantic role fillers, producing scores that correlate with human judgment as well as HTER but at much lower labor cost. As machine translation systems improve in lexical choice and fluency, the shortcomings of widespread n-gram based, fluency-oriented MT evaluation metrics such as BLEU, which fail to properly evaluate adequacy, become more apparent.

  • Current statistical speech translation approaches predominantly rely on just text transcripts and do not adequately utilize the rich contextual information such as conveyed through prosody and discourse function. In this paper, we explore the role of context characterized through dialog acts (DAs) in statistical translation. We demonstrate the integration of the dialog acts in a phrase-based statistical translation framework, employing 3 limited domain parallel corpora (Farsi-English, Japanese-English and Chinese-English).

  • In Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR), Out-of-Vocabulary (OOV) detection and translation pair relevance evaluation still remain as key problems. In this paper, an English-Chinese Bi-Directional OOV translation model is presented, which utilizes Web mining as the corpus source to collect translation pairs and combines supervised learning to evaluate their association degree.

  • We present a novel method for predicting inflected word forms for generating morphologically rich languages in machine translation. We utilize a rich set of syntactic and morphological knowledge sources from both source and target sentences in a probabilistic model, and evaluate their contribution in generating Russian and Arabic sentences. Our results show that the proposed model substantially outperforms the commonly used baseline of a trigram target language model; in particular, the use of morphological and syntactic features leads to large gains in prediction accuracy. ...

  • When rules of transfer-based machine translation (MT) are automatically acquired from bilingual corpora, incorrect/redundant rules are generated due to acquisition errors or translation variety in the corpora. As a new countermeasure to this problem, we propose a feedback cleaning method using automatic evaluation of MT quality, which removes incorrect/redundant rules as a way to increase the evaluation score. BLEU is utilized for the automatic evaluation.

  • There is a great difference between the superficial reading of a film and the proper interpretation of a clinical scintigraphic image by an imaging specialist. Fully utilizing the clinical image, the imaging specialist evaluates both the anatomical and the physiological structure of the human body. First the specialist must appreciate the patient’s clinical problem.Working from this clinical context, he then applies his understanding of the pathophysiological basis of disease and his knowledge of how such pathology may translate into various imaging patterns.
