Cowpea is an important leguminous vegetable crop usually grown during Pre-kharif, Kharif and Rabi season under West Bengal condition. Now days this crop is severely affected due to biotic stress. Seven foliar pathogens namely Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum capsici, Corynespora cassicola, Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium ciceri, Sclerotium rolfsii and Curvularia lunata were isolated from the diseased cowpea crop in Jaguli Instructional farm of BCKV.

Trichoderma spp. is biocontrol agents extensively used in management of fungal diseases of crop plants exhibiting mycoparasitism against a wide range of plant pathogens. Twelve Trichoderma isolates T. asperellum (7), T. harzianum (4) and T. longibrachiatum collected from ten district of U.P from chilli ecosystem were characterized for their antagonistic activity against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. capsici and Colletotrichum capsici of chilli. The isolates revealed differential reaction pattern against the test pathogens.

The present study was undertaken to isolate endophytic and rhizospheric actinomycetes from Gladilous and to evaluate their plant growth promoting traits. Out of 90 isolates, 40 were from rhizospheric soil and 50 from roots of Gladiolus plants. Sixteen isolates from rhizospheric and 14 from endophytic were observed to produce IAA ranged from 4.3-79.9 µg/ml. Eighteen (20%) isolates were observed to solubilize phosphate in the range of 6.1- 64.5mg/100ml.

This study aimed to finding best carbon and nitrogen sources that would allow maximum growth and antibiotic production of P. fluorescens AS15 for improving its bio control potentiality against banded leaf and sheath blight pathogen. The growth medium has a profound effect on growth and active metabolite production. The accurate incorporation of nutrients enhanced growth as well as antagonistic behavior of bio control agents (Slininger et al., 1996).

Chilli is one of the important spices and cultivated around the world for its peculiar hot taste. Chilli leafs prone to affect by Alternaria alternata (leaf spot). In order to overcome this problem, efforts have been made to evaluate the efficiency of the bio-control agent Trichoderma harzianum for controlling the leaf spot disease in chilli. Trichoderma harzianum was isolated from the field soil and identified through microscopic and recommended standard methods.

Efficacy of biocontrol agents and organic amendments was evaluated for their potential to manage the Fusarium wilt of tomato (Lycopersicon escluentum L.) caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL). Yeast, Trichoderma viride, T. harzianum and Pseudomonas spp. were collected from tomato growing areas of Tamil Nadu, India, and tested for antagonistic activity against the pathogen using a dual culture technique in Petri dishes.

The aim of the study was to access the anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activity on the growth of Alternaria porri under in vitro condition. The antagonistic activity of bacterial and fungal antagonists (Pseudomonas and Trichoderma spp.) was determined by the dual culture technique both on King’s B and PDA media respectively, Paper disc assay and Agar well mathod. Plates were incubated at 28ºC for 7 days and 2 days. The antagonistic activity of these antagonists was evaluated by mycelial growth and mycelial dry weight of test fungus (Alternaria porri).

Efficacy of three potential microbial bioagents, viz. Trichoderma viride, Bacillus thuringiensis, Pseudomonas fluorescens were evaluated against bacterial wilt of lettuce under hydroponic culture system. The microbial bioagents were tested in vitro for their antagonistic properties against Ralstonia solanacearum, the causal agent of bacterial disease in lettuce. Bioagents applied alone or as consortia, significantly reduced bacterial wilt pathogen in vitro producing varying sizes of inhibition zones in TTC medium.

Biological control represents an important approach to manage plant diseases. Blights of leaf, panicle and fruits caused by Alternaria alternata and the wilt caused by Fusarium solani are important diseases of litchi. Hence, as an alternative to chemical fungicides, biological control by Trichoderma spp. to manage pathogens of litchi was explored. The aim of this study was to isolate native Trichoderma spp. from litchi orchard ecosystem and to evaluate antagonistic potential and its biological fitness so as to develop a commercial formulation for field application to manage litchi diseases.

Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik) is an important crop, the major states producing lentil are Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Punjab. Lentil is an important component of farming systems in our country. It is one of the important and most nutritious rabi pulses. Vascular wilt causing by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lentis, Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc. causing collar rot and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary) causing stem rot, is most destructive soil borne diseases of lentil growing area worldwide. Use of chemicals continues to be major strategy to mitigate the menace of crop disease.

This work was aimed at isolating AHL degrading bacteria from fish culture pond soil, with abilities appropriate for use as probiotic in aquaculture. The presence of an autoinducer inactivation (aiiA) homologue gene and AHL-inactivation assay showed that BacillusthuringiensisQQ17, which was one among the 20 isolates, could rapidly degrade synthetic C6-HSL in vitro and hampered violacein production by Chromobacterium violaceum.

Endophytes are the micro-organism which shares the life long relation with the host. The bacterial endophytes promote the growth directly and indirectly by several mechanisms. Keeping in mind, the present investigation has been carried out to evaluate the bacterial endophytes for their plant growth promotion in vitro condition. Four screened bacterial antagonists viz., SVC 11, BE 1, NGB 21 and M1W1 were evaluated for the germination and the vigour of French bean, brinjal and rapeseed mustard seeds. The bacteria were used individual as well as in consortium mode on the respective seeds.
