This case of study happened in Hue City, where a deep hole was required for a pumping station. The soil at that location is very soft. As the temporary shoring method for the excavation was sheet piles walls and braced beams were not enough, the failure was occurred during the excavation work, showed by the displacement and inclination of the sheet piles walls and deformation of braced beam.

In this study, the effect of gellan gum biopolymer on strengthening bentonite slurry was studied. In order to observe the effect of gellan gum on the bentonite strengthening effectiveness, the unconfined compression tests were conducted on gellan gum-modified bentonite with consideration of gellan gum concentration, thermal curing process.

This paper presents the geotechnical conditions, the ground improvement methodologyand quality control during construction. The control sequence is performed by vertical and then horizontal drilling holes. The method of control work after excavation (horizontal control) allows to confirm the quality of the treatment blocks and specifically the bonding between the treatment block and the diaphragm wall.

The basement of a high-rise building is the optimal space for technical systems and parking. However, the construction in narrow urban areas usually has many unstable hazards. In this study, a numerical model has been established and calibrated using the finite element method on Plaxis 2D software that allowed well control of the design and construction processes of the Madison Building basement.

Back analysis is necessary for further design and construction of deep basement projects in urban areas. This paper is to present two case studies that include 3 basements excavated up-to15m below current street level. Both Hardening Soil model (HSM) and Mohr Coulomb model (MCM) were applied for the analyses of geotechnical aspects. Inclinometers were installed to record diaphragm wall’s deflections before construction.

This paper predicts the displacement of the diaphragm walls in deep excavations of Hk = 12m in Hanoi accounting for seismic loading. The walls are stably sustained using soil nail systems, struts, and top-down method. A finite element analysis software, PLAXIS 2D, is utilized to model the systems.

The Turasha River like the Malewa is a permanent stream. It drains the north Kinangop plateau and the mountain range to the east of it. It follows a u-shaped course, flowing northwards towards Kinangop plateau collecting tributaries from the forested massif of Kipipiri, before curving right round to join the southward flowing Malewa. Like the Malewa it has excavated a deep- walled cut several hundred feet deep in the flat-topped tuff plateau, and its tributaries are similarly incised.

This paper is an analysis of materials taken from the excavation site of the Villa Bottaro. The first chapter will provide the background of the ancient villa using the excavation reports and other documents to examine the archaeological site and the objects excavated. Chapter 2 is a review of the traditional understanding of the Third and Fourth Styles of Pompeian wall painting developed by the art historian August Mau. Chapter 3 brings forward the recent scholarship that questions the relevance of Mau's chronological system. ...

During the more than one hundred years since the villa was excavated, the most notable pieces recovered from the excavation turned out to be the frescoes found in the villa's peristyle. Their provenance is seemingly unquestionable, because the excavation photographs show them in situ on the portico walls. They have also been in museum exhibitions worldwide, while the rest of the frescoes and statuary from this excavation have had very little exposure outside of their museum's galleries. ...

The Roman Villa Borg unites both the excavation of one of the largest villa rustica in the Saar Mosel area and the complete reconstruction of the manorial area (Pars Urbana) of such a facility. As far as possible, this reconstruction is based on local findings or on excavation findings of similar facilities of the region (e.g. Echternach in Luxemburg). If necessary, either antique literature (e.g. Vitruv) or modern literature (e.g. for the reconstruction of the wall paintings) was consulted.

As a body responsible for this project, the district Merzig-Wadern respectively the Cultural Foundation of the district of Merzig-Wadern was found. Since August 1986, an area of about 2 hectares was released on the spot, fenced in and prepared for excavation. In cooperation with the community Perl as property owner and the employment office of Saarlouis and Merzig the archaeological investigations began on April the 1st 1987. By establishing an infrastructure like an excavation house with office-rooms, lounges and storerooms, ideal working conditions were created.

The history of the excavation already began about 1900, when the teacher Johann Schneider observed unnatural elevations in the terrain. He found bricks and wall remainders besides Roman ceramics. Because of the two World Wars the research of Schneider unfortunately fell into oblivion, and more than half a century passed until this spot again drew the attention of science. Expanded illicit excavations threatened to destroy the ground-monument to such an extent, that the State Conservation Department of the Saarland in 1986 felt bound to establish a systematic excavation....

The rock mass around an underground opening is subjected to a unique stress path that results in low radial confinement and both tangential loading and unloading conditions near the wall. As a result, the rock mass strength near underground excavations is controlled by failure mechanisms dominating at low confinement. Hence, when constructing underground works in hard rock, two general scenarios are encountered: (1) structurally controlled gravity-driven failures; and (2) stress-induced failure with spalling and slabbing....
