Exotic germplasm

Genetic diversity provides the capacity for plants to meet changing environments. It is fundamentally important in crop improvement. Fifty-nine local maize lines developed at INERA and 41 exotic (temperate and tropical) inbred lines were characterized using 1057 SNP markers to (1) analyse the genetic diversity in a diverse set of maize inbred lines; (2) determine the level of genetic diversity in INERA inbred lines and patterns of relationships of these inbred lines developed from two sources; and (3) examine the genetic differences between local and exotic germplasms.

Genetic variability and diversity play a major role in framing successful breeding programme. It is evident that genetically diverse parents are likely to produce high heterotic effects and yield desirable transgressive segregants. Keeping this in view, the present study was conducted to evaluate nature and extent of genetic variability and diversity in Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. & Coss.].

Of these accessions EC 667369 and EC 667533 have been identified as high yielding accessions having specific adaptability and responsiveness to specific environment both by regression analysis and crossover and non crossover interactions concept. However, none of the accessions out yielded any of the used checks i.e. DL 85, Jyoti and DWR 28 neither by regression nor cross over and non-cross over interaction analysis.

Twenty pomegranates (Punica granatum L.) accessions were studied to determine inter-relationship of traits as well as to study genetic variation among yield attribution traits to understand the usefulness of genotypes in the breeding programme. It establishes that among all the parameters analyzed, a significant genetic difference was present for yield and yield attribution traits for exotic germplasm of pomegranate under study.

Twenty pomegranates (Punica granatum L.) germplasms were studied under midhill conditions of Himachal Pradesh at the Experimental farm of Fruit Science, Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan during 2013 in ten year old plants. Dewey recorded maximum plant height (3.18 m) and Trunk girth (96.09 mm) whereas maximum plant spread in N-S direction (2.65 m) and plant spread in E-W direction (2.54 m) was recorded in Loulou and Green Globe, respectively. Leaf area was maximum (27.75 cm2 ) in Green Globe. Fruit yield were recorded highest (13.6 kg) in Green Globe.

A total of 75 sorghum germplasm lines including 74 Indigenous cultivar (IC) and one Exotic cultivar (EC) were characterized using 27 morphological descriptors provided by PPV & FRA for DUS testing in sorghum. Results revealed that maximum variation was present among genotypes for glume traits viz., colour (6 groups), neck of panicle (5 groups), length for flower with pedicel (5 groups), time of panicle emergence (4 groups), colour of dry anther (4 groups), panicle length of branches (4 groups), panicle shape (4 groups) and caryopsis colour (4 groups).

Plant genetic resources are the bed rock of any crop improvement programme. Applied breeding programme emphasizes selection within elite germplasm sources to enhance the opportunities of developing genotypes superior to those currently available. Indigenous as well as exotic germplasm constitute important resources for addressing serious breeding issues, viz. increasing genetic variability, improving the derived populations for specific traits especially biotic and abiotic stresses or even yield, enhancing quality and eventually broadening the genetic base of present-day cultivars.

The exploration of genetically variable accessions is the key source of germplasm conservation and potential breeding material for the future. The more diverse group of cultivars provides an ample opportunity to breeders for re-leasing new and superior varieties, considering their quality traits for direct commercial utilization. In this study, we analyzed genetic structure, diversity and relationships in 66 accessions of Cicer arietinum using SSR molecular markers. A total of 44 PCR based SSR primers were used for molecular characterization of 66 accessions.
