  • In this paper we address the problem of question recommendation from large archives of community question answering data by exploiting the users’ information needs. Our experimental results indicate that questions based on the same or similar information need can provide excellent question recommendation. We show that translation model can be effectively utilized to predict the information need given only the user’s query question.

  • Web search quality can vary widely across languages, even for the same information need. We propose to exploit this variation in quality by learning a ranking function on bilingual queries: queries that appear in query logs for two languages but represent equivalent search interests. For a given bilingual query, along with corresponding monolingual query log and monolingual ranking, we generate a ranking on pairs of documents, one from each language. Then we learn a linear ranking function which exploits bilingual features on pairs of documents, as well as standard monolingual features. ...

  • The applicability of many current information extraction techniques is severely limited by the need for supervised training data. We demonstrate that for certain field structured extraction tasks, such as classified advertisements and bibliographic citations, small amounts of prior knowledge can be used to learn effective models in a primarily unsupervised fashion. Although hidden Markov models (HMMs) provide a suitable generative model for field structured text, general unsupervised HMM learning fails to learn useful structure in either of our domains.

  • More than 50 percent of women in low-resource settings deliver without skilled birth attendants and hours away from facilities where these medicines and emergency obstetric care should be available. Managing high blood pressure and related seizures and preventing bleeding for births that are not attended by skilled providers remain major challenges for improving maternal survival. Additional studies are needed to understand the gaps and challenges with regard to policy, regulatory, manufacturing, supply chain management, information systems, financing and demand.

  • This paper proposes an approach to reference resolution in situated dialogues by exploiting extra-linguistic information. Recently, investigations of referential behaviours involved in situations in the real world have received increasing attention by researchers (Di Eugenio et al., 2000; Byron, 2005; van Deemter, 2007; Spanger et al., 2009). In order to create an accurate reference resolution model, we need to handle extra-linguistic information as well as textual information examined by existing approaches (Soon et al., 2001; Ng and Cardie, 2002, etc.). ...

  • Any organization that has a searchable web site or intranet is sitting on top of hugely valuable and usually under-exploited data: logs that capture what users are searching for, how often each query was searched, and how many results each query retrieved. Search queries are gold: they are real data that show us exactly what users are searching for in their own words. This book shows you how to use search analytics to carry on a conversation with your customers: listen to and understand their needs, and improve your content, navigation and search performance to meet those needs....

  • In short, the literature still lacks a convincing test of the buffer-stock model. In this paper we use a survey question on precautionary wealth available in the 2002 Bank of Italy Survey on Household Income and Wealth (SHIW) to propose a direct test of buffer stock behavior. The question asks people how much savings they think they need for future emergencies, and is similar to a question contained in the 1995 and 1998 Surveys of Consumer Finances described in Kennickell and Lusardi (2004).

  • C++ Unleashed is a survey of advanced topics in C++. The goal of this book is to provide a focused examination of each of these topics, covering the essential information you need to fully exploit the power of the C++ language. Many of the topics in this book deserve a book in their own right. Part III, “Manipulating Data” Part III opens Chapter 11—a discussion of advanced techniques using recursion. In Chapter 12, we discuss sorting algorithms, and in Chapter 13, we discuss object-oriented searching.

  • Significant trends in analytics and information management, along with regulatory pressures, demand new technologies that can turn increasing volumes of data into insight that can be exploited very rapidly. In addition, customer dynamics are changing more frequently so the need to develop and refresh analytic models that can be managed securely is accelerated.

  • Opinion Question Answering (Opinion QA), which aims to find the authors’ sentimental opinions on a specific target, is more challenging than traditional factbased question answering problems. To extract the opinion oriented answers, we need to consider both topic relevance and opinion sentiment issues. Current solutions to this problem are mostly ad-hoc combinations of question topic information and opinion information.
