In recent years, studies have been carried on the selection and breeding of melon to reduce its production cost. The F1 seeds of this species are usually created by parental lines. Notably, the parental lines are separated from each other to secure the breeding materials.

The mitochondrial genomes of higher plants vary remarkably in size, structure and sequence content, as demonstrated by the accumulation and activity of repetitive DNA sequences. Incompatibility between mitochondrial genome and nuclear genome leads to non-functional male reproductive organs and results in cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS). CMS has been used to produce F1 hybrid seeds in a variety of plant species.

Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) has been widely used for commercial F1 hybrid seeds production. CMS is primarily caused by chimeric genes in mitochondrial genomes. However, which specific stages of anther development in cabbage are affected by the chimeric genes remain unclear.

Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) and its restoration of fertility (Rf) system is an important mechanism to produce F1 hybrid seeds. Understanding the interaction that controls restoration at a molecular level will benefit plant breeders. The CMS is caused by the interaction between mitochondrial and nuclear genes, with the CMS phenotype failing to produce functional anthers, pollen, or male gametes.

Brassica species are major oilseed crops which are an increasingly important part of the human diet worldwide. In present investigation 11 varieties and their 55 F1’s were characterized for storage seed protein profiling using sodium dodecyl sulphate – polyacryl amide gel electrophoresis (SDS - PAGE). The electrophoresis of the proteins revealed protein bands in the range of 80kD to less than 14 kD molecular weight (MW). Out of 15 bands 14 bands were more or less monomorphic and only single band was polymorphic.

Experiments were carried out to determine the insecticidal activity of Aegle marmelos Correa against Callosobruchus chinensis L. in the laboratory. Plants were extracted with petroleum ether, methanol, ethanol and water by using Soxhlet apparatus and tested against adult of C. chinensis. Plant extracts were showed insecticidal activity by affecting through mortality, oviposition deterrence and inhibition of F1 adult emergence.

Generation mean analysis study in cowpea was undertaken to estimate the gene action operating in the inheritance of yield and its components. Six basic generations viz., P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 of five crosses, namely Pant lobia-1 x BRDCP-11 (cross I), Pant lobia-2 x GC-3 (cross II), Waghi local x W-203-1 (cross III), KM-5 x GC-3 (cross IV) and GC-3 x CDP-107 (cross V) were studied. Scaling test was applied to test the adequacy of additive-dominance model for the traits under investigation.

Pre-requisite for any plant biotechnological approach is development of an efficient plant regeneration system in that crop. In this regard the in vitro regeneration was achieved by using cotyledon explants from aseptically raised seedlings of popular Capsicum F1 hybrids Bharat and Indra. Seeds of both hybrids were exposed to different treatments for proper germination, were decontaminated and sown in vitro on half-strength MS medium.

Thirty interspecific crosses (including reciprocals) involving three genotypes/varieties of greengram (Vigna radiate (L) Wilczek) cv. HUM 1 HUM 2 & HUM 8 and five genotypes/varieties of blackgram (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) cv. T 9, Pant U 19, PDU 1, BHUU 1 & BHUU 91-346-1 were attempted. Nine out of 30 crosses were successful only when greengram was used as seed parents. The crossability ranged from 0.0 to 61.0 per cent. Germination, survival and pod bearing habit of the F1s hybrids were much better in Kharif season as compared to spring/summer season.

The present study was undertaken to confirm the hybridity of Brassica juncea L. F1 plants based on the amplification pattern of SSR markers. The complementary banding pattern of the male and female parents helped to confirm the genuineness of F1 plants developed. The seeds of two genotypes of Brassica juncea, RSPR-01 used as female parent and DonskajaIV used as male parent were raised in pots under field conditions and crossed to develop F1 seeds. Out of 20 random SSR primers used for the screening of parental genotypes for polymorphism, 5 primers were found polymorphic.
