Early life exposure to adverse environments affects cardiovascular and metabolic systems in the offspring. These programmed effects are transmissible to a second generation through both male and female lines, suggesting germline transmission. The success of most crop improvement programs depends on variability and heritability of desirable traits. An investigation was carried out during kharif 2016 at Botanical garden, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, India to assess the extent of variability generated by hybridization and to estimate the heritability and genetic advance as percent of mean for seed cotton yield and its component traits in F2 generation of cross QTP 16 × ASa 151. Generation mean analysis study in cowpea was undertaken to estimate the gene action operating in the inheritance of yield and its components. Six basic generations viz., P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 of five crosses, namely Pant lobia-1 x BRDCP-11 (cross I), Pant lobia-2 x GC-3 (cross II), Waghi local x W-203-1 (cross III), KM-5 x GC-3 (cross IV) and GC-3 x CDP-107 (cross V) were studied. An experiment was conducted on genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance in wheat population including 48 F1’s + 48 F2’s + 16 parents in RBD during Rabi 2014-15. Analysis of variance for the design of experiments revealed that mean squares due to treatments were highly significant for all the ten characters studied, while mean squares due to replications were non-significant in both F1 and F2 generations.

Earliness, an adaptive trait and factor of variation for agronomic characters, is a major trait in plant breeding. In present investigation, the experimental material comprised of P1, P2, F1, F2 and F2:3 generations of wheat crossDL-788-2 X GW-322 for earliness related traits with objective of linkage and QTL mapping in bread wheat. Out of 200 SSR markers screened for parental polymorphism for earliness related traits, only 11% of SSR markers showed good polymorphism between two parental lines.

The inheritance pattern of flower colour in underutilized tuberous legume crop yam bean was studies by utilizing a white flower colour line (YBWF1) and two purple flower colour lines (RM-1 and L No-3). The F1 and F2 population along with parental lines were evaluated to study the inheritance pattern of the flower colour. All the F1 hybrids showed purple colour in both the crosses and in the F2 segregation generation, the observed distribution of the flower colour fitted the expected Mendalian ratio of 3 (Purple flower colour):1 (white flower colour).

Studies on the genetic basis for resistance to jassid (Amrasca biguttula biguttula) was done in F2 segregating generation of one promising cross of interspecific cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. X Gossypium barbadense L.) in the year 2015-16. The cross FQT-37 X SB-YF-425 segregated in the ratio of 13:3 for susceptibility and resistant. In the case of resistant type, all the plants were in grade II, implying moderate resistance. This gene action is called as inhibitory gene action.
