F4 Segregants

Multi-parent advanced generation intercross (MAGIC) populations are a newly established tool to dissect quantitative traits. We developed the high resolution MAGIC wheat population WM-800, consisting of 910 F4:6 lines derived from intercrossing eight recently released European winter wheat cultivars.

At the same time, the breeding lines from the advanced generations are also used as parental lines for developing commercially exploitable heterotic hybrids. But, most often the source of early generations i.e., F3, F4, F5 and F6 segregating populations offer wider opportunities for achieving high success, because of wider genetic base.

Screening of 230 F4 segregants of cross DC 615 (Susceptible parent) × Dharwad local (Resistant parent) along with checks (Dharwad local, DC 615, DC 15, DCS 47-1 and C 152) was carried out against bruchids (Callosobruchus maculatus) at the Department of Genetics and plant Breeding, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad. Out of 230 segregants, 36 were highly resistant, 43 moderately resistant, 110 least susceptible, 34 moderately susceptible and 7 were found to be highly susceptible.

Progenies from a cross between ‘Gopaldoddiga’ and ‘ARB6’ cultivars were selected on the basis of combining ability analysis to study the genetics of transgressive segregation for zinc content and agronomic traits using augmented designs. Results revealed the presence of general combining ability and specific combining ability effects, and the parents were found to be good general combiners for zinc in grains, 100 grains weight and grain yield per plant.

Genetic variability is prerequisite for any crop improvement program as it helps breeders in selection process. For this purpose, present study aimed to estimate genetic parameters of eleven quantitative characters along with reaction for yellow rust resistance of 243 segregating lines of wheat during F4 and F5 generations derived from two crosses...

In F3 population except seeds per siliqua and 100 seed weight the 15 crosses differed significantly for all the other nine characters, however in F4 population the 15 crosses differed significantly for all the characters. Pusa Bahar × Rajasthan local selection -1 (13.62) was the highest performer in F3 generation and in F4 Rajasthan local selection1 × Pusa Barani (12.53) was the highest yielder.

The simple sequence repeat (SSR) or microsatellite marker is currently the most preferred molecular marker because of its reproducibility and codominant nature. The aim of this study was to validate SSR markers for bacterial wilt (BW) and tomato leaf curl virus disease (ToLCV) in tomato. DNA isolated from the parents Mukthi and IIHR-2195 was used to validate five SSR primers already reported for BW and ToLCV. One primer SSR20 which showed good polymorphism and reproducibility among parents were selected for further validation in F3 and F4 population.

The present experiment comprised of three parents Meha, GJM-1006 and GJM-1008 their 30 F4 progenies derived from the crosses Meha x GJM-1006 (17 progenies) and Meha x GJM-1008 (13 progenies). Seed yield per plant was strongly and positively associated with the yield components like days to 50 % flowering, plant height, primary branches per plant, days to maturity, pods per plant, 100 seed weight, seeds per plant and clusters per plant in the two segregating populations except days to 50 % flowering and days to maturity in the cross Meha x GJM-1006.

Genetic variability is prerequisite for any crop improvement program as it helps breeders in selecting the superior plants in segregating generations. Genetic variability for yield and its contributing traits in F3 and F4 generations derived from the cross WH 711 / WH 542 was assessed. The 238 F3 and F4 progenies along with parents were characterized on the basis of 12 morpho-physiological traits. The study revealed highly significant difference among the progenies for yield and its contributing traits.
