Endomyocardial fibrosis is a grim disease. It is the most common restrictive cardiomyopathy worldwide, but the exact etiology and pathogenesis both remain unknown. Endomyocardial fibrosis is recurrently associated with chronic eosinophilia and probable dietary, environmental, and infectious factors, which contribute not only to the onset of the disease (an inflammatory process) but also to its progression and maintenance (endomyocardial damage and scar formation).

A new formulation to calculate the shakedown limit load of Kirchhoff plates under stochastic conditions of strength is developed. Direct structural reliability design by chance constrained programming is based on the prescribed failure probabilities, which is an effective approach of stochastic programming if it can be formulated as an equivalent deterministic optimization problem.

Detailed objectives of this study are: to analyze the risk of failure and probability of failure of existing reinforced concrete bridges qualitatively and quantitatively; to consider the effects of interactions among various deterioration parameters and among bridge components on system failure; to identify major durability related distress mechanisms of deterioration of reinforced concrete bridges and model the subsequent risk of failure of bridge system;…

The Baikal seal is the only endemic mammal of Lake Baikal. In late October 2017, 132 dead Baikal seals were found on the shore of the lake. To identify causes of death, postmortem necropsy, virological, chemical toxicological, microbiological, and parasitological studies were carried out. Several hypotheses for explaining the causes of the deaths were put forward. The most probable causes are heart failure and asphyxia due to echo sounders (sonar).

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is known as one of the most popular forms of dementia affecting numerous people worldwide. The Amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides form oligomeric conformations that cause the intracellular Ca2+ and Zn2+ abnormality leading to the death of neuron cells. The failure of AD therapy targeting Aβ oligomers probably caused by misunderstanding the ions transport through transmembrane Aβ (tmAβ) ion-like channel since Aβ oligomers transiently exist in a mixture environment involving various order of Aβ oligomers.

The Stochastic Process Model (SPM) represents a general framework for modeling the joint evolution of repeatedly measured variables and time-to-event outcomes observed in longitudinal studies, i.e., SPM relates the stochastic dynamics of variables (e.g., physiological or biological measures) with the probabilities of end points (e.g., death or system failure).

In the design of steel crane girders, various sources of uncertainty such as material properties, loads, and geometric tolerances are inherent and inevitable. Using deterministic structural and/or load conditions may lead to low-reliability systems in real applications. In this paper, the probability of failure of overhead crane bridge girders with uncertain design parameters is investigated. First, the design problem of a crane double girder is introduced within a set of analytical stress and defection constraints.

Qualitative risk assessment methods are often used as the first step to determining design space boundaries; however, quantitative assessments of risk with respect to the design space, i.e., calculating the probability of failure for a given severity, are needed to fully characterize design space boundaries. Quantitative risk assessment methods in design and operational spaces are a significant aid to evaluating proposed design space boundaries.

The study derives the closed-form solution of the valuation of deposit insurance under forbearance for banks whose capital requirements are either solely based on the 1988 Basel Accord (BA) approach or the VaR-based approach. The study also demonstrates that the deposit insurance liability under BA rises monotonically with portfolio risk, but it is much less risk-sensitive under VaR. It implies that the VaR-based capital regulation is more stable in containing deposit insurance losses and failure probability than the BA capital regulation.

The Basel III Capital Adequacy Accord (BCAA) will cap government capital injections as qualifying capital at 90% of the nominal amount of such capital outstanding, beginning in 2013, and the cap will decline by 10% during each subsequent year (Eubanks, 2010); this cap is called a capped ratio schedule of government capital instruments. We add to the literature on government capital injections by providing an option-based illustration of how the capped ratio schedule can influence bank interest margins and failure probability.

This paper presents an application of the split-population duration model in identifying operating strategies and structural attributes of commercial banks that increased their financial and temporal endurance (translated into probability and duration of survival, respectively) during the late 2000s recession. This study’s results identify the isolated effects of certain variables on a bank’s temporal endurance that have not been captured by other commonly used survival models.

The study aimed at developing a model that predict the probability of failure of companies operating in the developing economies using financial ratios and non-financial ratio. The logit model was the main statistical tool applied. A matched sample design was used. Three models were developed and compared; a model consisting of financial ratios only (Model 1), non-financial ratios only (Model 2) and both financial and non-financial ratios (Model 3). From the study, comparatively Model 3 is more efficient in predicting the corporate failure status in one year from now.

This study attempts to quantify the shocks to a banking network and analyze the transfer of shocks through the network. We consider two sources of shocks: external shocks due to market and macroeconomic factors which impact the entire banking system, and idiosyncratic shocks due to failure of a single bank. The external shocks we considered in this study are due to exchange rate shocks. An ARMA/GARCH model is used to extract i.i.d. residuals for this purpose.

The association between uric acid (UA) on one side and systemic hypertension (Htn), dyslipidemia, glucose intolerance, overweight, fatty liver, renal disease and cardiovascular disease (CVD) on the other side is well recognized. However, the causal relationship between UA and these different clinical problems is still debatable. The recent years have witnessed hundreds of experimental and clinical trials that favored the opinion that UA is a probable player in the pathogenesis of these disease entities.
