  • In the present study nine fungicides were evaluated against the false smut disease of rice during kharif-2016. Among the different fungicides tested azoxystrobin (18.2 %) SC + difenconozole (11.4 %) SC and metiram (55 %) WG + pyraclostrobin (5 %) WG @ 0.1 per cent recorded the least disease severity of 1.85 and 2.52 per cent respectively, followed by propiconazole 25 EC, Azoxystrobin 25 % SC, Difenconazole 25 % EC, tebuconozole 250 EC and flusilazole (25 %) SE + carbendazim (12.5 %) SE showed better efficacy at 0.1 per cent and enhanced the paddy yield under field condition.

  • The efficacy of six different systemic fungicides and two combi-products were evaluated for inhibition of growth of pathogen at three different concentrations. Among systemic and combi-products fungicides were evaluated, the cent per cent inhibition was observed in Propiconazole 25 % EC, Tebuconazole 250 EC, Azoxystrobin 18.2 % + Difenconazole 11.4 % SC and Tebuconazole 50 % + Trifloxystrobin 25 % WG at all the concentrations.

  • A survey was conducted on Swarna cultivar (MTU 7029) of rice during Kharif 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 at Nadia district of West Bengal to record the fungal disease and their respective yield loss. Ten diseases (Leaf blast, Sheath blight, Sheath rot, Brown spot, Brown Leaf Spots caused by Curvularia lunata, Stackburn disease, Leaf spot caused by Nigrospora oryzae, Stem rot, Rotting by Choanephora cucurbitarum and False smut) were based on visual observation on Swarna rice cultivar and yield loss due to respective disease was calculated by measuring test weight (gm) of rice grains.

  • Prior to the introduction of the modern varieties, the rice crop survived for centuries with traditional varieties with robust plant type but low yield. The farmers started applying higher doses of fertilizers in general and nitrogen in particular as these varieties were fertilizer responsive and these changes in rice cultivation resulted in an altered microclimate, which led to the accentuation of the insect pest and disease problems. Many diseases such as sheath blight, sheath rot, false smut and leaf scald have become severe in several parts of the country.

  • False smut disease caused by Ustilaginoidea virens (Cooke) (Takahashi) is a grain disease of rice that converts whole grain into powder (smut balls) form. Disease infestation leads to sterile spikelets and reduction in 1000 grain weight. Considering the importance of disease the experiment was carried out to assessment of IDM module with Propiconazole and Carbendazim in rice through on field trials (OFT) against false smut disease in Kabirdham district of Chhattisgarh.

  • Rice false smut [Ustilaginoidea virens (Cooke) Takahashi] is an upcoming major disease in India. The initiation of the disease was recorded the 88th day after sowing and 9th September in 2017 and 86th day after sowing and 14th September in 2018. The incidence of false smut starts from 1.55 per cent at 36 MSW and reached to 7.22 per cent at 42 MSW in 2017 while, 0.53 per cent at 37 MSW and reached to 6.68 per cent at 42 MSW in 2018.However, in pooled of two years, the first symptom of false smut was recorded on 36 MSW (0.77%) and reached to 42MSW (6.95%).

  • A total eighteen rice cultivars were screened against false smut disease of rice under natural conditions in wetland field at Navsari during 2017 and 2018. Eighteen cultivars evaluated, out of seven cultivars viz., GNR-2, GNR-3, GNR-5, GNRH-1, Mahisagar, NAUR-1 and Dandi were found completely false smut free during 2017 and 2018. Whereas, highest per cent disease incidence i.e., 9.09, 7.02 and 8.06 per cent and disease severity index i.e., 15.00, 7.79 and 11.12 was found in cv.TN-1 whereas, highest average smutted ball i.e., 1.65, 1.11 and 1.
