Ebook "Family farming and the Worlds to come" explore the choices facing society and possible development trajectories at national and international levels, and the contribution that agriculture will have to make. They call for a recommitment of public policies in favor of family farming in developing countries and stress the importance of planning actions targeted at and tailored to the family character of agricultural models. But, above all, they highlight the need to overcome strictly sectoral rationales, by placing family farming at the core of a broader economic and social project.

The paper analyses some demographic and socio-economic characteristics associated with the current population ageing process in Vietnam and the needs for care for the elderly. Improved education and living standards allow families to take better care of the elderly. However, for many elderly people, accumulated assets are still not enough to take care of their lives. The proportion of elderly people increases coupled with a decreased rate of fertility, smaller household sizes, and limited level of financial accumulation, etc.

The household-based access to social protection and gender mainstreaming remain limited, especially in the areas of vocational training and elderly care. Those who have participated in social insurance to receive retirement pensions in the future just make a low proportion. The quality of the healthcare services covered by the health insurances is not good enough.

The study of social protection in the context of Vietnam’s modernisation and international integration requires that attention be paid to social protection policies for Vietnamese families. However, there are currently few social protection policies targeting families specifically, in other words, policies that regard families as the beneficiary or subject of intervention. Meanwhile, various social protection policies exist for specific subjects and members of the family. This reflects the shortage of social protection policies for families today.

For many years the United States was virtually the only major industrial- ized country without a family and medical leave policy. Employers could legally fire a worker who needed time off to care for a seriously ill child, parent, or spouse. Employers had wide latitude to fire workers tempo- rarily unable to work because of illnesses or injuries. Employers could legally fire women who needed time off for pregnancy and childbirth if they also denied time off to nonpregnant employees who were unable to work.

As the NCPCR policy document states, “[...] civil unrest exposes children to multiple deprivations. Children are killed, hurt and maimed as a direct result of violence. Access to food, water, sanitation, health care and schooling deteriorates during unrest. Political insecurity pushes children into situations that can circumscribe the remainder of their lives. It disrupts families and social networks that support children’s physical, emotional and social development. The NCPCR has encountered children who are displaced and forced to drop out of school as a result.

We discuss the use of social networks in implementing viral marketing strategies. While influence maximization has been studied in this context (see Chapter 24 of [10]), we study revenue maximization, arguably, a more natural objective. In our model, a buyer’s decision to buy an item is influenced by the set of other buyers that own the item and the price at which the item is offered. We focus on algorithmic question of finding revenue maximizing marketing strategies. When the buyers are completely symmetric, we can find the optimal marketing strategy in polynomial time.

This payment pattern contrasts with the monthly payments typically associated with AFDC/TANF and food stamps, and it may provide a way to gain addi- tional insight into the nature of credit markets and consumption behavior for low-income families. Our goal in section 3.5 is to summarize succinctly what has been done, to evaluate the strengths of this work, and to identify areas where addi- tional work could be useful to either verify existing conjectures or alter what we thought was known.

We know that the structures of families and of households have changed in recent decades and that this has had a profound affect on public policy planning and service delivery in South Africa. The institution of the family interfaces with other social institutions in any society – it therefore stands to reason that the political, social and economic transformations resulting through colonialism and apartheid in South Africa have affected families and their residential dimension, the household, for all cultural groups.
