Farmer’s using vermicomposting

Vermicomposting is a simple biotechnological process of composting, in which certain species of earthworms are used to enhance the process of waste conversion and produce a better end product. A cross sectional study was conducted in Erode and Tirupur districts of Tamil Nadu among randomly selected 120 Kangayam cattle farmers. A semi structured interview schedule was prepared to assess the independent variables and to measure the knowledge level of farmers. The schedule was pretested in order to check the reliability and validity.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz.) is an important tuber cultivated in India. Cassava is vegetatively propagated through stem cuttings (setts). A mature plant with two stems will give about 12 to 20 normal sized (20 cm) setts after one year. Farmers are practicing 8-10 cm long cuttings from the mature part of stem and planted in vertical position in nursery bed at closer spacing of 5 cm. Under conventional system of propagation, 1250 to 1500 stems are required for planting one hectare of area.

Vermi-compost being potential organic manure is gradually getting popularity among farmers and also farmers are gradually becoming well aware about the beneficial role of earthworm. Again while the focus is on reducing the use of chemicals in crop cultivation use of bio-agents has also got immense importance. Accordingly research work focusing on enrichment of vermi-compost with different beneficial bio-agents and its different aspects are the primary need.

Environmental degradation is the major conflicts in present day, due to excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which creates deterioration of soil resources. The common practice of waste management is obtained by vermi-composting by using earthworms as bio-fertilizers. The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bastar set up vermi-composting unit as a model unit for demonstration and conducted training programme in Bastar district’s village like Madhota, Badechakwa, Bodanpal and Nadisagar, as they utilizes agricultural waste materials for vermi-compost as well as the bund side weeds.

Vermicompost is a fine granular, dark brown/black coloured organic product prepared by earthworms by using animal dung and organic wastes which is much useful for soil health. It has biological properties as rich in population of soil micro-organisms compared with those in conventional composts. Vermicompost has adequate amount of micronutrient and macronutrients depending on sources of earthworm’s feedstock. Earthworm promotes soil fragmentation and increase aeration of soil by volume 8-30 per cent.

In today’s era, heavy doses of chemical fertilizers and pesticides are being used by the farmers to get a better yield of various field crops. These chemical fertilizers and pesticides decreased soil fertility and caused health problems to the consumers. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of vermicompost and their biproduct vermicompost rubbish on growth and yield of tomato on various time durations. Physico-chemical properties of the soil in both control and experimental plots were studied and interrupted with results.

Vermicompost is a nutrient-rich, microbiologically-active organic amendment that results from the interactions between earthworms and microorganisms during the breakdown of organic matter. It is a stabilized, finely divided peat-like material with a low C:N ratio, high porosity and high water-holding capacity, in which most nutrients are present in forms that are readily taken up by plants.
