  • The fermentation of cocoa beans is an important part of cocoa processing. Fermentation of cocoa beans increases the quality and price of the beans and the resultant cocoa. Although the fermentation of cocoa beans can increase the quality and income of cocoa farming, few farmers in Indonesia implement this fermentation process. This research therefore, focuses on the way Indonesian farmers assess whether or not to ferment their cocoa beans. A total of 284 cocoa farmers were sampled in Central Sulawesi Indonesia.

  • A policy of high rice prices can increase paddy farm incomes but also cause a rise in rice expenditures for farm households. Such a policy is needed to stimulate production but can harm rice consumers, especially poor families. We surveyed 284 paddy farmers in Gantar Sub-District, Indramayu Regency, Indonesia to analyze the impact of increasing rice prices on farmers’ net incomes, including poor paddy farmers. We found that a price increase benefits farmer if the price transmission elasticity is more than 0.2 for non-poor paddy farmers or 0.6 for poor paddy farmers.

  • In this study, the essential oil from the leaves of bael tree was extracted and added as an additional income to the farmers along with its fruits, timber, fodder and other domestic usages. The essential oil yield from the leaves of bael tree was obtained by hydro-distillation. A socio-economic survey in the Bisht Village and Kirsali village of district Dehradun, Uttarakhnad was conducted and the existing role of bael tree in rural agroforestry and economy was also assessed.
