Productivity of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] in sub-Sahara Africa is curtailed by a lack of farmer-preferred and improved cultivars and modern production technologies. The objectives of the study were to determine the extent of genetic diversity present among a collection of cowpea accessions from Zambia and Malawi using phenotypic traits and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and, to select distinct and complementary parental lines for cultivar development.

The farmers generally use leaf colour as a visual and subjective indicator for N fertilizer need (Furuya, 1987). Since farmers generally prefer to keep leaves of the crop dark green, it leads to over application of fertilizers N resulting in low recovery efficiency.

Onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of the important commercial spice crop grown in India for its varied utilization in different cuisines. Odisha produces less than 20% of its consumption needs and for the rest it has to depend on imports from other states. The production and productivity of onion mainly depends upon its genotype, edaphic and climatological factors.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is among the main food crops of Togo. In the country’s traditional agriculture, a great diversity a varieties exist and need to be preserved. Moreover, the production constraints that can be solved through breeding of novel varieties and the farmers’ varietal preference criteria are not yet well documented. To fill these gaps of knowledge a survey was conducted in 40 villages distributed throughout the country using participatory approach (individual survey and group discussion with questionnaire).

Pulses occupy a unique position in Indian agriculture. It plays a vital role in fixing atmospheric nitrogen in to Nitrate and make the soil fertile. Banka district is one of the important pulse trading centers in Bihar. Agro climatic condition of Banka as well as Bhagalpur district of Bihar is suitable for main pulses like chickpea and pigeon pea cultivation. An effort has been made to prove the leverage of suitable agro- climatic condition for the pulse crops and agribusiness opportunity available in that area.

Presence of diverse weed flora during critical period of crop-weed competition, is one of the major obstacles in conservation agriculture that reduces which can reduce the crop yield appreciably significantly. During critical period of crop-weed competition, chemical method of weed control is by far the most preferred way to minimize the weed infestation of weeds, farmers are mostly relying on chemical methods of weed management.

Dairy farmers prefer different floor type like rubber, stones, gravels, bricks, concrete, mates and mattress etc. for providing comfort to the animals according to their own status. Poorly designed stall and bedding facilities cause an increased risk of productive, reproductive performance and lameness in dairy animals including decrease in there resting phase (Cook et al., 2009). Depth and height of bedding materials is also an important factor for dairy cows comfort.

Primary occupation of India is agriculture and rural areas are quite concerned with this occupation. There are various aspects on which the rural development is based on agriculture, improving standard of living, imparting education, women empowerment and many more. Information sharing of new production processes with farmers was prominent in the sixties which was the key to the success of the green revolution. Rural economies can be benefitted from ICT by focusing on social production, social consumption and social services in rural areas (Malhotra, 2001).

Rice plays a vital role in the national food grain supply and is the main driver of India’s food security. Despite having a firm footage on rice cultivation, India is facing a formidable challenge to feed its burgeoning population.Seed is a vital and essential input for attaining sustained growth in agriculture production and productivity. Hence, the present study was taken up to identify the preferences of farmers while purchasing seed from various sources and to estimate the source-wise per unit cost of seed in Nalgonda district of Telangana.

Understanding the genetic variability and diversity of a crops species provides opportunity for plant breeders to develop new and improved cultivars having both farmer-preferred and breeder-preferred traits. In the present study 11 morphological characters and 16 quantitative characters were recorded from 27 advance breeding lines/varieties to identify useful alleles for future breeding. Genotypes varied considerably in plant growth and morphological characters. The overall mean of ShannonWiener diversity index (H’) value was 0.

The integrated disease module were evaluated for management of anthracnose, die back and Powdery mildew diseases on two newly hybrid preferred by the farmers NS-1701 (Namdhari Seed Co.) and VNR-435 (VNR Seed Co.) and one wide spread variety Tejswini. Disease control by IDM was significantly effective in hybrid varieties NS-1701, VNR-435 and Tejaswini as compared to control (without IDM).

Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) is the major constraint for the production of chickpea as it feeds on the pods causing direct economic damage to the farmers. A single H. armigera larva feeds 30-40 pods in its life time. It is polyphagous and multivoltine pest which is difficult to control. Farmers generally rely on the insecticides but this pest was reported to show resistance to most of the insecticides used against it. Host plant resistance for managing this pest is best as it is compatible with other pest management practices.

Coastal Odisha is one of the most flood prone areas of India where the paddy crop in the wet season is often devastated by flash floods with an average productivity of only 0.5–0.8 t ha⁻ ¹. The present study showed that farmers preferred to cultivate low yielding traditional land races owing to their better flood tolerance and the unavailability of flood tolerant high yielding varieties (HYVs).
