Farmers suicides in India

Agriculture remains the mainstay of Indian economy. The major contribution for the Indian agriculture is supported by the marginal and small farmers. Agriculture is most important for the sustainable development. Until 1935, the major sources of funds for the farmers were the professional money lenders. Due to their unduly high rate of interest, farmers were heavily burdened with debts, which lead to the riots and even miserable suicides. Later, Government of India has undertaken those issues and established agricultural credit policy through various institutional agencies.

Green Revolution has made to improve agricultural production and productivity. Along with that, it caused severe stress on soil fertility, decreased chemical efficiency, failure of overall crop yield. As a result of the above factors, the farmer becomes more miserable year by year and induced them to commit suicide. This paper attempts to bring together the present status of organic farming in the World and India. The greater extent of organic agricultural land is occupied by Australia (35.65 million hectares).

Agriculture is synonymous with the word farming in India. Agriculture being an important sector of Indian economy supports more than fifty percent of the population. A cursory look at the timeline reveals that the contribution of agriculture after independence for initial two decades was 48% and 60% of GDP. It declined to 26% in 2001-2002. The most tragic part of our country is the report of more suicidal deaths is among the farming community.

The present research study was carried out with an exploratory design of social research. As Telangana state stands in second position in occurrence of farmer suicides in India, Telangana state was purposively selected for the study. In the state, Warangal and Karimnagar districts were selected purposively based on highest number of suicides.

The present investigation was conducted during year 2017-18 in Aurangabad district of Marathwada region in Maharashtra state. The main objective is to study the personal, socio-economic, psychological and situational characteristics of the farmer’s families who committed suicides. From selected district five talukas were selected based on considerable farmer suicide cases. Thirty three villages were selected randomly based on considerable farmer suicide cases. Forty victims was selected proportionate method of random sampling for the study.

The present investigation was undertaken in eight districts of the Marathwada region of Maharashtra State (India) to study the socio-economic, psychological and situational causes of farmers’ suicide. Data was collected from the family members of the victims with the help of a specially designed interview schedule. Statistical tools like mean, standard deviation, percentage and frequency were used. Results revealed that majority of the victims were in middle age, educated up to high school, annual income between Rs. 50001 /- to 150000 /-, and marginal to small land holders. Only 4.
