  • Agriculture remains the mainstay of Indian economy. The major contribution for the Indian agriculture is supported by the marginal and small farmers. Agriculture is most important for the sustainable development. Until 1935, the major sources of funds for the farmers were the professional money lenders. Due to their unduly high rate of interest, farmers were heavily burdened with debts, which lead to the riots and even miserable suicides. Later, Government of India has undertaken those issues and established agricultural credit policy through various institutional agencies.

  • Present investigation conducted in Nanded district in Marathwada region of Maharashtra state. From this district four talukas were selected based on considerable farmer suicide cases. Twenty seven villages were selected randomly based on considerable farmer suicide cases. Forty victims were selected randomly for the study. The ex-post facto research design was used for the study. The data were collected with help of pretested interview schedule from the victim’s households as per their convenience at their home.

In the state, Warangal and Karimnagar districts were selected purposively based on highest number of suicides.

  • A total of 15 victim families belonging to Shikaripura and Shivamogga taluks of Shivamogga district of Karnataka were interviewed. The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics. Most of the suicided farmers were 73.33 per cent belongs to medium level of age group. Majority of suicided farmers 60.00 per cent were having medium level of education. The marital status was married for all the suicided farmers and 66.67 per cent of suicided farmers were marginal farmers (< 2.5 acre). It was found that 53.33 per cent suicided farmers belonged to the medium level income group.

  • The present investigation was undertaken in eight districts of the Marathwada region of Maharashtra State (India) to study the socio-economic, psychological and situational causes of farmers’ suicide. Data was collected from the family members of the victims with the help of a specially designed interview schedule. Statistical tools like mean, standard deviation, percentage and frequency were used.
