Sugarcane Farming is one of the important segments of Indian agriculture because it is raw material to sugar industry for which India ranks second in the world economy. Under the depleting groundwater scenario, productivity of high water requiring crops like sugarcane can only be sustained using water-economizing techniques like drip irrigation. The study was carried out to assess the extent of use of drip irrigation system in sugarcane crop. For this purpose, 240 sugarcane growers in three districts Telangana state were taken as study respondents.

Water is a vital commodity and it is essentially used for maximizing crop production and productivity. Drip irrigation is gaining popular among the farmers because of its high efficiency and productivity. This study was conducted during the Kharif season of 2018 and 2019 to find the best automated drip irrigation system among the time based, volume based, soil moisture sensor based and tensiometer based drip irrigation in comparison with conventional drip irrigation system.

The present study was undertaken to analyze the extension contacts and participation in extension activities between the farmers using drip irrigation system and conventional irrigation system in kinnow cultivation of Punjab by collecting data from 200 farmers (100 each) in four districts of Punjab which were selected purposively i.e. Bathinda, Fazilka, Hoshiarpur and Sri Muktsar Sahib/ Faridkot.

Sustainable Sugarcane Initiative (SSI) is one of the advanced methods of sugarcane cultivation technique which involves the use of less seed setts, water, land, labour and optimum utilization of fertilizers to achieve maximum potential yield. The SSI is an alternative to conventional method of sugarcane cultivation. The field demonstrations were conducted in farmer’s field at five different locations to study the effect of sustainable sugarcane initiative and conventional sugarcane cultivation under drip irrigation system during 2017–2018.

Water is a well known basic and the most important input for agricultural production. A major quantity of water is utilized for irrigation in agriculture. In traditional surface irrigation method the losses in water conveyance and application are large. These losses can be considerably reduced by farmers by adopting drip irrigation technology. Proper economization of water would be advantageous to the farmers as well as it would be helpful in bringing more land under cultivation.

Drip system of irrigation provides enhanced water use efficiency and water application efficiency up to 90% whereas it is about 70% for sprinklers and 45% for flood method of irrigation. In this method as water is supplied directly to crop root zone through drippers, water losses in distribution and conveyance are far lower than those under flood irrigation. A case study was conducted regarding performance evaluation of drip irrigation system used for growing brinjal in the village Shivpur, district Mungeli in Chhattisgarh.

Since last few decades, fresh water availability is continuously declining against time and share of irrigation to it is also decreasing. However, under such situation we have to increase the income of the farmers. Efficient utilization of available water resources may be the best possible answer to it. Drip irrigation system is a water application method which can improve the water use efficiency.
