Fast growth

This thesis develops a contingency-based model for competitive advantage, tested over time on a sample of rapidly growing small-to-medium enterprises. Incorporating two independent studies, the project addresses interactions between specific elements of strategic orientation, strategic behaviour, firm performance, while examining the moderating role of environmental turbulence.

This thesis examines the influence of market (Narver & Slater, 1990), learning (Sinkula, Baker, & Noordewier, 1997), and entrepreneurial orientation (Lumpkin & Dess, 2001) as sources of competitive advantage in rapidly growing small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs). The present thesis incorporates two studies (Study 1 and Study 2), utilizing a sequential explanatory design, which is characterized by undertaking quantitative data collection and analysis, prior conducting qualitative research (Cresswell, 2003).

Slow fashion seems to embrace a concept at the heart of mindfulness practice: awareness. Mindfulness is a state of awareness that involves accepting a clear focus on present realities. The phenomenon of mindfulness is developing as a potential force for cultural change.

The PufX protein is essential for photosynthetic growth; it is locatedwithin the core in a 1 : 1 stoichiometry with the RC. Control analysis of the glycolytic flux was carried out in two fast-growth tumor cell types of human and rodent origin (HeLa and AS-30D, respect-ively). Determination of the maximal velocity (Vmax) of the 10 glycolytic enzymes from hexokinase to lactate dehydrogenase revealed that hexokin-ase (153–306 times) and phosphfructokinase-1 (PFK-1) (22–56 times) had higher over-expression in rat AS-30D hepatoma cells than in normal freshly isolated rat hepatocytes.

What is the highest possible replication rate for living organisms? The cellular growth rate is controlled by a variety of processes. Therefore, it is unclear which metabolic process or group of processes should be activated to increase growth rate. An organism that is already growing fast may already have optimized through evolution all processes that could be opti-mized readily, but may be confronted with a more generic limitation.

For diffeomorphisms of smooth compact finite-dimensional manifolds, we consider the problem of how fast the number of periodic points with period n grows as a function of n. In many familiar cases (e.g., Anosov systems) the growth is exponential, but arbitrarily fast growth is possible; in fact, the first author has shown that arbitrarily fast growth is topologically (Baire) generic for C 2 or smoother diffeomorphisms.

Common carp is one of the most important cultured species in Vietnam. The goal of the carp breed program was creation of a common carp breed with stable genetic qualities such as fast growth, high survival rate and attractive appearance. In the first phase (1981-1985) the program focused on the assessment of the original carp varieties, which should be used as initial materials for selection.
