On October 30, 2020, a strong earthquake (Mw6.6–7.0) occurred offshore, just north of Samos Island, causing life losses, injuries and damages, especially on the Turkish side. The broader area is characterized by a complex geodynamic setting with both rich seismic history and numerous active faults of different direction and kinematics. The first aim of this study is to define the seismic source of the mainshock, based on seismological and geodetic data (GPS measurements and originally processed GNSS records), as well as our field observations on Samos Island few days after the mainshock.

The Tuz Gölü Basin is the largest sedimentary depression located at the center of the Central Anatolian Plateau, an extensive, low-relief region with elevations of ca. 1 km located between the Pontide and Tauride mountains. Presently, the basin morphology and sedimentation processes are mainly controlled by the extensional Tuz Gölü Fault Zone in the east and the transtensional İnönü– Eskişehir Fault System in the west.

The North Anatolian Fault System (NAFS) is an approximately 2–110-km-wide, 1600-km-long right-lateral intra-continental transform fault boundary between the Anatolian platelet and the Eurasian plate. The Gerede fault zone is one of the major active structures in the western section of the NAFS.

Convergence of the Africa, Arabia, and Eurasia plates and the westward escape of Anatolia have resulted in an evolving plate boundary zone in the Eastern Mediterranean. The current location and nature of the plate boundary between the Anatolian and the African plate is difficult to trace due to the scattered crustal earthquakes and the absence of deep ones.

The İvriz detachment fault has been determined on the southern border of the Ulukışla basin separating the metamorphic Bolkar Group of the Taurus Mountains and the Paleocene-Lower Eocene Halkapınar formation of basin deposits. The fault dips towards the north and has kinematic indicators (asymmetric grain/grain aggregate porphyroclasts, oblique foliation, and S-C fabrics), suggesting a top-to-the-N-NE sense of shearing.

In this study, the method of Fault Movement Potential (FMP) proposed by Lee et al. (1997) is used to assess the movement potential of some major faults and its relationship with the seismic activities in Northwestern Vietnam. The fault movement potential is assessed by the magnitude of FMP (from 0 to 1) and calculated based on the relationship between kinematic characteristics of the faults and regional tectonic stress field. The maximum compressive stress axis in Northwestern Vietnam has the nearly horizontal trend (7.4±4.0) and the direction of 170.2±6.7.
