  • Ebook "Designing low carbon societies in landscapes (Ecological research monographs series)" focuses on three major means of achieving a low carbon society: conservation of the ecosystem complex, changes of arrangement of landscapes, and creation of biodiversity. There are specific countermeasures to be taken for carbon absorption in the three types of landscapes urban, cultural, and natural because their carbon balances differ. Urban landscapes are promising sites because they have the potential for greening and the creation of biodiversity.

  • Each occupation and each type of labor in society has different characteristics. Of which, there are occupations with high specificity, where workers have to work in special environments and conditions, even very hard conditions. We aimed to evaluate the energy consumption of the soldiers during labor, military training, and work.

  • This study aims to investigate how nematodes’ communities variables such as diversity, sex and feeding structure alter in different 5 layers of sediment deep profile of the river bed. Our studies found for the first time that nematodes’ communities not only stay on 10 cm first layers but they can contribute until 50 cm deep in the sediment profile of the river bed.

  • Weaning of goat kids immediately after birth and feeding them on bovine or heat-treated caprine colostrum, referred to as snatching, is considered an effective control measure in some infectious diseases. The study was carried out in one-week-old goat kids to gain insight into the profile of lipid metabolites and to investigate the influence of snatching on kids’ metabolism.

  • Cyanobacterial blooms often consist of mixtures of microcystin-producing and microcystin-free species, and both can cause unpredictable effects on aquatic organisms. In this work, the subchronic effects of the cyanobacterial crude extracts (CCEs) from microcystin-producing and microcystin-free cyanobacteria with different microcystin concentrations (1, 10, and 50 µgL−1)on Daphnia magna were investigated. The life-history trait responses of D. magna to CCEs were determined based on survival, reproduction, and somatic growth.

  • Larval developmental patterns are extremely varied both between and within phyla, however the genetic mechanisms leading to this diversification are poorly understood. We assembled and compared the developmental transcriptomes for two sea biscuit species (Echinodermata: Echinoidea) with differing patterns of larval development, to provide a resource for investigating the evolution of alternate life cycles.

  • The mammalian adipose tissue plays a central role in energy-balance control, whereas the avian visceral fat hardly expresses leptin, the key adipokine in mammals. Therefore, to assess the endocrine role of adipose tissue in birds, we compared the transcriptome and proteome between two metabolically different types of chickens, broilers and layers, bred towards efficient meat and egg production, respectively.

  • Copy number variation (CNV) is an important type of genetic variation contributing to phenotypic differences among mammals and may serve as an alternative molecular marker to single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) for genome-wide association study (GWAS). Recently, GWAS analysis using CNV has been applied in livestock, although few studies have focused on Holstein cattle.

  • Ruminants are herbivorous, forgot fermentors. They are able to acquire nutrients from plant based foods by fermenting it in a specialized stomach having four-compartment stomach. Any sudden change in feeding pattern or an improper feeding regimen is bound to disturb the balance of the various types of microbes, leading to an over population of certain unfavorable microbes and changes in rumen environment that may cause severe problem in animals.

  • The puffing machine was designed, fabricated and tested. This machine consists of blower unit, heating unit, container, casing, wooden platform and power consumption. Two types of power transmission was used in the developed machine, one from electric motor of 0.25 hp capacity for blower and the other one for heating coil connected directly to electric source. After achieving 220-250oC temperature in the container, the specified feed rate of conditioned rice in to the container will result in puffed rice within a short span of around 10-12 sec.
