Female gametes

The seminal vesicles synthesise bioactive factors that support gamete function, modulate the female reproductive tract to promote implantation, and influence developmental programming of offspring phenotype. Despite the significance of the seminal vesicles in reproduction, their biology remains poorly defined.

Stick insects (Phasmatodea) have a high incidence of parthenogenesis and other alternative reproductive strategies, yet the genetic basis of reproduction is poorly understood. Phasmatodea includes nearly 3000 species, yet only the genome of Timema cristinae has been published to date. Clitarchus hookeri is a geographical parthenogenetic stick insect distributed across New Zealand. Sexual reproduction dominates in northern habitats but is replaced by parthenogenesis in the south. Here, we present a de novo genome assembly of a female C.

The maturation and successful acquisition of developmental competence by an oocyte, the female gamete, during folliculogenesis is highly dependent on molecular interactions with somatic cells. Most of the cellular interactions identified, thus far, are modulated by growth factors, ions or metabolites. We hypothesized that this interaction is also modulated at the transcriptional level, which leads to the formation of gene regulatory networks between the oocyte and cumulus cells.

Apomixis is a form of asexual reproduction that produces offspring without the need for combining male and female gametes, and the offspring have the same genetic makeup as the mother. Therefore, apomixis technology has great application potential in plant breeding.

Self-incompatibility (SI) is a biological mechanism to avoid inbreeding in allogamous plants. In grasses, this mechanism is controlled by a two-locus system (S-Z). Calculation of male and female gamete frequencies is complex for tetraploid species.

Male sterility is characterized by non-functional pollen grains, while female gametes function normally. It occurs in nature sporadically, perhaps due to mutation. The phenomenon of male sterility is of great significance to produce cost effective hybrid seeds. Onion crop provides one of the rare examples of very early recognition of male sterility (Jones and Emsweller, 1936), its inheritance and use in hybrid seed production (Jones and Clarke, 1943). Since then male sterility has been reported in fairly large number of crops including vegetables.

Fourteen genotypes and 3 different gamma ray doses were tested to develop an efficient haploidization protocol in squash. For this purpose, male flowers collected 1 day before anthesis were irradiated with 150, 200, and 300 Gy gamma ray doses, and female flowers were pollinated with the irradiated pollens the next day.

Crossbreeding work in Ethiopia was initiated in the early 1950s. Following this initiation a number of governmental (example, Ethiopian Agricultural Research Organization, Ministry of Agriculture, National Artificial Insemination Center, Higher Learning Institutes) and non-governmental organizations (International Livestock Research Institute and Swedish International Development Agency) have worked in the development of the dairy sector.

W e recommend amendments clarifying the ethics committee’ s func- tions in relation to approving extensions to the applicable period of storage of gametes and embryos. The bill would ensure that the ethics committee made decisions about approving, changing, or cancelling extensions to storage periods in much the same way as it would make decisions on activities listed as requiring approval under the Act. Proposed new sections 10A to 10D and 28(1)(aaa) of the Act relate to the ethics committee’ s functions in dealing with storage issues.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) recommends that egg donors go through no more than six cycles, but there is no legal limitation and no tracking of egg donors who go from one clinic or broker to another. Sperm donors at the California Sperm Bank are asked to commit for at least a year and donate at least once a week. Cryopreservation is the process of slowly freezing bodily materials so that they can be used at a future date. In ART, this typically involves sperm or embryos, both of which can be successfully frozen. Egg cryopreservation, on...

Much of the literature concerning health benefits of physical activity is based on studies done primarily with men. Only recently have large-scale studies been initiated to investigate the effects of physical activity on women’s health and wellness. Chris Wells, the author of this paper, has been a pioneer in the study of physical activity for women. As you will see, much more research studying girls and women is necessary, but much has been accomplished in recent years. Diseases often thought to be “diseases of men” affect women as well as men.

Fertilization is a process whereby two specialized parental cells, gametes, unite to form a new entity the embryo. Even though the process of fertilization is usually considered as completed as soon as the zygote—a new cell resulting from the fusion between the male gamete (spermatozoon) and the female gamete (oocyte)—is ready to enter the first embryonic mitotic division, the exact time point at which fertilization begins is much less clearly defined. The outcome of fertilization, i.e.
