Fertility in a dairy farms

Endometritis is a prevalent uterine disease in postpartum cows. The disease reduces fertility performance and milk yield, and subsequently, productivity and profitability of dairy farms. The reduction in performance is associated with considerable economic losses on dairy farms.

Embryonic mortality (EM) is a major concern in the dairy industry across the world and it occurs due to loss of conceptus following fertilization until days 42-45 of pregnancy. The present study was carried out with the objective to detect EM in the crossbred cattle at the University Livestock Farm, Mannuthy, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University during the period from September 2017 to August 2019. Among the breedable animals inseminated at spontaneous oestrus, non-return animals (n=362) were selected for the study.

Selecting animals for lifetime traits by predicting them based on first lactation traits is a useful method for economic dairy farming. This study was conducted to analyze the prediction performance of various models for prediction of lifetime performance in Sahiwal cattle. The first lactation and lifetime traits were generated from the data on milk production and fertility traits of Sahiwal cattle maintained at ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, India.

Indian agriculture is characterized by the ownerships of small land holdings. The small holdings are used for mainly production of food crops. The small farmers inadequately use fertilizers and without or meager irrigation can produce only one crop in a year, which is turn make the farmers economic condition not only pathetic also lead to inability to purchase input required for farming, like fertilizers, good quality seeds etc.

For its part, Japan generally provides support for irrigation and drainage, and the readjustment of agricultural land. Agri-environmental programs are important aspects of agricultural policy and include measures encouraging farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices that reduce the amount of fertilizer and pesticide usage as well as improve the quality of soil with composting.
