Fetus during pregnancy
-
Preserving the mother’s safety, sustaining the pregnancy state, and achieving the optimal fetal outcome are the major priorities when managing obstetric patients for non-obstetric surgery. Only necessary and urgent surgeries are carried out during pregnancy due to the efects of anesthesia and surgery on the fetus.

Severe laryngeal edema during pregnancy is uncommon but can be encountered, particularly in patients with preeclampsia accompanied by other comorbidities. Careful consideration must be given to balance the urgency of securing the airway with the safety of the fetus and the patient’s long-term health consequences.

About 2% of pregnant women receive non-obstetric surgery under general anesthesia each year. During pregnancy, general anesthetics may affect brain development of the fetus. This study aimed to investigate safe dosage range of isoflurane.

DNA methylation (DNAm) profiling has emerged as a powerful tool for characterizing the placental methylome. However, previous studies have focused primarily on whole placental tissue, which is a mixture of epigenetically distinct cell populations.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) accounts for more than two thirds of leukemia during pregnancy and has an incidence of 1 in 75,000 to 100,000. Its clinical management remains a challenging therapeutic task both for patient and medical team, given to the therapy-attributable risks for mother and fetus and the connected counseling regarding pregnancy continuation.

Cancer treatment during pregnancy is a growing problem especially now that women delay childbearing. Systemic treatment of these malignancies during pregnancy centers mainly on the anticancer drugs anthracyclines, widely used in treating hematological and breast cancer during pregnancy and sometimes associated with early and late toxicity for the fetus.

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonosis caused by Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular parasite. It can cause significant morbidity and mortality in the developing fetus if the pregnant women get acute infection during pregnancy. The aim of the study was to assess the seroprevalence of Toxoplasmosis in antenatal women with bad obstetric history. The seropositivity was analysed according to age, bad obstetric history, socioeconomic and literacy status. A total of 160 antenatal women with BOH and 24 antenatal women with previous normal delivery as control group attending to Govt.

High levels of stress due to diverse psychosocial factors have a direct impact on the mothers’ wellbeing during pregnancy and both direct and indirect effects on the fetus. In most cases, psychosocial risk factors present during pregnancy will not disappear after delivery and might influence the parent-child relationship, affecting the healthy development of the offspring in the long term.

Malignancy is the second most common cause of mortality in the reproductive period and it complicates up to one out of every 1000 pregnancies. When cancer is diagnosed during pregnancy, the management approach must take into consideration both the mother and her fetus. Hematologic cancers diagnosed in pregnancy are not common, resulting in paucity of randomized controlled trials. Diagnosis of such malignancies may be missed or delayed, as their symptoms are similar to those encountered during normal pregnancy. Also, many imaging studies may be hazardous during pregnancy.

The diagnosis of cancer during pregnancy at least in the Western world is a rare phenomenon, but this might be raised into the future due to late pregnancies in the modern societies. The coexistence of pregnancy and cancer implicates numerous medical, ethical, psychological and sometimes religious issues between the mother, the family and the treating physician. Breast, cervical cancer, melanoma and lymphoma are the most common malignancies diagnosed during pregnancy.

The management of gestational ovarian cancer can be challenging because of the risk of fetal wastage, and the possibility of treatment-related complications to the fetus; it is based on insufficient data from retrospective studies and case series. Here, a literature review of the diagnostic and surgical approaches to the gestational ovarian cancer has been performed; moreover, data on safety of chemotherapeutic treatments in pregnancy, including both oncologic and fetal outcomes, have also been reviewed.

Dithiocarbamate propineb is an organometal fungicide, which is widely used for the control of diseases in plants. Female Wistar rats were exposed orally to propineb concentrations of 200 and 400 ppm, from the 6th day of gestation up to birth. At 400 ppm, propineb showed a variety of macroscopic (e.g. ptosis and paralysis) and microscopic symptoms in the organs of both fetuses and female rats.

Cancer is the leading cause of death among women aged 35 to 54. As childbearing among older parturients increases, so likely will the incidence of cancer in pregnancy. Currently, cancer complicates one in 1000 pregnancies. The management of pregnant women with cancer presents a major challenge to the care-giving team: the risks and benefits of treatment (and withholding treatment) must be weighed for both the mother and the fetus.

Co-cyprindiol (ethinylestradiol and cyproterone acetate; Dianette®, Clairette®) is indicated primarily for acne or hirsutism but it is also contraceptive and concerns have been raised about fetal exposure to cyproterone acetate. The SPC for Dianette29 advises that pregnancy must be excluded before treatment is begun, and states that animal studies have revealed that feminisation of male fetuses may occur if cyproterone acetate is administered during the phase of embryogenesis at which differentiation of the external genitalia occurs.

There is no doubt that the protection of women during pregnancy and lactation must be one of the major priorities of health systems and social policies. The effect of women’s nutritional status on pregnancy outcomes is particularly strong, and adequate maternal nutrition is closely related to the survival and well-being of babies and children. However, not all women are mothers, and their nutritional and health needs go far beyond motherhood and reproduction. Women of all ages in developing countries face elevated risks of nutritional deficiencies.

Chickenpox or Shingles (Varicella Virus)--First-time exposure to this virus during pregnancy may cause miscarriage, multiple birth defects, and severe disease in newborns. Chickenpox can be a serious illness in adults. Most people (90% to 95% of adults) were exposed to chickenpox as children and are immune. For women who do not know if they had chickenpox as a child, a blood test can verify if they are immune. If they are not immune, a chickenpox vaccine is now available.

There is no known safe amount of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Fetal alcohol syndrome is a preventable birth defect characterized by growth restriction, facial abnormalities and central nervous dysfunction. Many more babies, however, are diagnosed with fetal alcohol effect, which is a lesser degree of the syndrome. Fetuses of women who ingest six drinks per day are at a 40 percent risk of developing some features of the fetal alcohol syndrome (5;9).

Improving oral health during pregnancy not only enhances the overall health of women but also contributes to improving the oral health of their children. In the past, some oral health professionals have postponed treatment because of the uncertainty about the risk of x-rays and bacteremia (4;5). However, deferring appropriate treatment may cause unforeseen harm to the woman and possibly to the fetus for several reasons. First, women may self-medicate with over the counter medications like acetaminophen to control pain.
