  • Mobile devices as learning tools enrich mobile computer supported collaborative learning (mCSCL). Engaging in metacognitive interaction promotes students’ regulatory learning and this can provide a positive influence to learning outcomes. However, despite insightful empirical studies, there is no research into the actual processes of new knowledge creation in this context. This leads to the question of how mobile learning experiences can support the co-creation of new knowledge. Two classroom action research studies were carried out using a qualitative research approach.

  • Some banks generate significant income from trading activities. In this paper, we analyze a panel of US banks and find that the effect of trading on bank profitability depends on each bank’s capital ratio. Trading enhances profitability for banks with high capital ratios, but reduces profitability for banks with low capital ratios. Our findings provide empirical support for theories in which trading can divert capital away from relationship lending and undermine bank profitability.

  • Our empirical evidence is broadly consistent with the predictions of the entrenchment and information effects arguments. We find that earnings informativeness, measured by the earnings-return relation, is significantly negatively related to the ultimate owner’s control level, conditional on the owner having gained effective control. This evidence is consistent with the information effect. We also find that earnings informativeness is significantly negatively related to the degree of divergence between the ultimate owner’s control and the equity ownership level.

  • Second, our findings contribute to an emerging discussion in the real estate literature on the choice of portfolio specialization. To date, existing work has focused primarily on geographic diversification (see e.g. Hartzell, Sun and Titman (2010)). Our findings shed additional light on the importance of portfolio manager specialization in this industry. Finally, our work provides additional empirical support for the importance of financial intermediation in the gathering of specialized knowledge and efficiencies.
