  • Captive animal populations, be it for food production or conservation programmes, are often maintained at densities far beyond those in natural environments, which can have profound effects on behaviour, immune and stress levels, and ultimately welfare. How such alterations impact transcriptional responses to pathogen infection is a ‘different kettle of fish’ and remains poorly understood.

  • In this study the hydrochemical characteristics of the Manchalapur tank water or lake was analysed for its suitability for domestic, fish rearing and irrigation purposes. A total of 10 water samples each were drawn from the inlet, outlet and two other locations in the water spread area of the tank and analysed for TDS, pH, EC, BOD5, COD, major ions, detergent and pathogen contamination in three distinct seasons, viz. pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon, based on standard methods.

  • The present study, carried out from September 2018 to August 2019, reports the seasonal fluctuations in the intensity of infection level of helminth parasites in the silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, reared along with native carps in ponds and other water bodies of Darbhanga , Bihar, India. The host fish were found to parasitize two monogenean ecto-parasites, Dactylogyrus vastator (in gill & skin) and Gyrodactylus elegans (in skin); one cestode (Bothriocephalus acheilognathi in intestine) and one nematode (Camallanus ophiocephali in stomach).

  • Chanos chanos, commonly known as Milkfish is one of the most preferred and cultured brackish water finfish species across Southeast Asia. The major source of seed input is smaller fry collected from wild are sold off in minimum prize whereas fingerling size which can be attained in 1-2 month nursery rearing fetches a better prize. Experiments were conducted to find the growth and survivability of wild caught milk fish fry (5-6cm with 0.9 to 1g size), in clear water and biofloc base indoor culture (1 tonne tank) as well as traditional pond condition (0.

  • Soybean meal (SBM) and groundnut meal (GNM) incorporated diets were evaluated as replacement of fish meal for rearing of fingerlings of catfish, Heteropnuestes fossilis (Bloch.) for a period of 150 days. Fish meal in the control diet (D1) was replaced with SBM and GNM at 50 % level (D4 and D5) and 100 % level (D2 and D3) respectively, whereas in diet D6, SBM and GNM (1:1) replaced 100 % of fish meal.

  • This study was conducted to study the effect of stocking density on growth and survival of seabass, Lates calcarifer in floating net cages in closed bay, Bapatla, Andhra Pardesh, India. Triplicate groups of seabass with an average initial weight of 1.29±0.12 g were randomly stocked in floating net cages (1m×1m×2m) at 20, 40, 60 and 80 fish/m3designated as SD20, SD40, SD60 and SD80 respectively. Seabass in the cages were fed with 45% CP formulated diet at 10% of body weight twice daily. Sampling was done weekly.

  • Coldwater disease (CWD) is a bacterial disease that affects a broad host-species range of fishes that inhabit cold, fresh waters. This disease occurs predominately at water temperatures of 16 C and below, and is most prevalent and severe at 10 C and below. Coldwater disease occurs in cultured and free-ranging populations, with hatchery-reared young trout and salmon species especially vulnerable to infections. Flavobacterium psychrophilum is the etiological agent of CWD.

  • Diseases of fishes caused by Aeromonas spp. are common, have broad host ranges and may cause high mortality. Treatments of captive-reared populations using antimicrobials are limited with concerns for bacterial resistance development and environmental dissemination. This study was done to determine whether selected plant-derived essential oils were bactericidal to Aeromonas spp. Initially, twelve essential oils were evaluated using a disk diffusion assay to an isolate of A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida, cause of fish furunculosis.

  • small water bodies like ponds now contributes 80% of the country’s inland fish production. However, future growth in freshwater aquaculture to meet rising demand for fish is likely to be constrained by limited supplies of land for digging new ponds and of water to fill them. In this context, reservoirs offer immense scope for increasing fish production.
