  • This study evaluated the effects of carotenoid-rich diets on the phenotypic coloration, carotenoid level, weight gain and expression of coloration-linked genes in skin, fin and muscle tissues. Carotenoids were extracted from dried Daucus carota peel, Ipomoea aquatica leaves, and Moringa oleifera leaves. Eighty (80) size-14 fish were fed with carotenoid-rich treatments twice a day for 120 days.

  • Enormous variability in skin colour and patterning is a characteristic of teleost fish, including Salmonidae fishes, which present themselves as a suitable model for studying mechanisms of pigment patterning. In order to screen for candidate genes potentially involved in the specific skin pigment pattern in marble trout (labyrinthine skin pattern) and brown trout (spotted skin pattern), we conducted comparative transcriptome analysis between differently pigmented dermis sections of the adult skin of the two species.

  • The scale degeneration is thought to be related to the adaptation to the extreme environment with cold climate and high-altitude in schizothoracine fishes. Gymnocypris eckloni, a schizothoracine fish living in plateau waters with the elevation above 2500 m, is nearly esquamate and only covered with shoulder scales and anal scales, making it a good model species to study the molecular mechanism of scale degeneration.

  • Collagen is widely used in the manufacture of food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. Collagen from fish skin has many advantages over other collagen sources, hence, the research of collagen from stingray skin is of interest. The process of cleaning and extracting collagen from stingray skin has been investigated and optimized to create good collagen quality from stingray skin. The optimal conditions of collagen extraction were determined, with three independent factors: acetic acid, solid-to-liquid ratio and extraction time which all affect the extraction efficiency of stingray skin.
