The present study provides information on the otolith morphometry of nine species of gobies (in three families, i.e., Eleotridae, Gobiidae, and Oxudercidae) caught in the Ba Lat estuary of the Red River in 2019. Otolith morphology of species in one family resembles, but it is clearly different between species in the same genus.

Clonorchiasis infection is a food-borne parasitic disease that significantly impacts on public health. Among the three species of small liver flukes, Clonorchis sinensis (C. sinensis) is the most prevalent. It is estimated that approximately 35 million individuals worldwide are infected with C. Sinensis, with those affected having a risk of developing cholangiocarcinoma. This study employed an analytical descriptive study, conducting cross-sectional surveys involving 459 individuals aged 18 and older at the study site.

Resting egg production of rotifers provides critical advantages in larviculture of most fish species due to the reduction in the costs of labour and algae production. The study was conducted to investigate the effects of temperature on population growth and resting egg production of a freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus, collected in Northern Vietnam.

Thesis study of the composition of the parasitic nematodes in marine fishes in the off Vietnam is urgently needed. The survey’s results are not only provide the information about the fauna of fish’s nematoda, the relation between hosts-parasites, but also assess the the potential risks for human consumption.

The epidermal mucus of fish species has been found to contain antimicro-bial proteins and peptides, which is of interest in regard to fish immunity. An acidic extract from the epidermal mucus of the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) was found to exhibit antimicrobial activity against Bacillus mega-terium, Escherichia coli andCandida albicans. This activity varied signifi-cantly when salt was added to the antimicrobial assay, and was eliminated by pepsin digestion.

The recent discovery of a large hyperactive antifreeze protein in the blood plasma of winter flounder has helped explain why this fish does not freeze in icy seawater. The previously known, smaller and much less active type I antifreeze proteins cannot by themselves protect the flounder down to the freezing point of seawater.

The cellular retinoic acid-binding protein type I (CRABPI) is encoded by a single gene in mammals. We have characterized twocrabp1genes in zebra-fish, designatedcrabp1a and crabp1b. These twocrabp1 genes share the same gene structure as the mammalianCRABP1genes and encode proteins that show the highest amino acid sequence identity to mammalian CRAB-PIs. The zebrafishcrabp1aandcrabp1bwere assigned to linkage groups 25 and 7, respectively.

Thebandccrystallins are evolutionarily related families of proteins that make up a large part of the refractive structure of the vertebrate eye lens. Each family has a distinctive gene structure that reflects a history of succes-sive gene duplications. A survey ofc-crystallins expressed in mammal, rep-tile, bird and fish species (particularly in the zebrafish, Danio rerio) has led to the discovery of cN-crystallin, an evolutionary bridge between theband cfamilies.

To elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying the heat shock response in cold-water fish species, genes enco-ding heat shock transcription factors (HSFs) were cloned fromRTG-2cellsof the rainbowtroutOncorhynchusmykiss. Consequently, two distinctHSF1genes, namedHSF1aand HSF1b, were identified. The predicted amino acid sequence ofHSF1ashows 86.4% identity to that ofHSF1b.Thetwo proteins contained the general structuralmotifs ofHSF1, i.e. a DNA-binding domain, hydrophobic heptad repeats and nuclear localization signals. ...

Fatty acid-binding protein type 1 (FABP1), commonly termed liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP), is encoded by a single gene in mam-mals. We cloned and sequenced cDNAs for two distinct FABP1s in zebra-fish coded by genes designatedfabp1a andfabp1b. The zebrafish proteins, FABP1a and FABP1b, show highest sequence identity and similarity to the human protein FABP1.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) andb-glucan from Francisella victoria, a fish pathogen and close relative of highly virulent mammal pathogenFrancisella tularensis, have been analyzed using chemical and spectroscopy methods. The polysaccharide part of the LPS was found to contain a nonrepetitive sequence of 20 monosaccharides as well as alanine, 3-aminobutyric acid, and a novel branched amino acid, thus confirmingF. victoriaas a unique species.

Prion proteins (PrP) of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians have been successfully cloned, expressed and purified in sufficient yields to enable 3D structure determination by NMR spectroscopy in solution. More recently, PrP ortholog genes have also been identified in several fish species, based on sequence relationships with tetrapod PrPs.

In their aqueous habitats, fish are exposed to a wide range of osmotic con-ditions and differ in their abilities to respond adaptively to these variations in salinity. Fish species that inhabit environments characterized by signifi-cant salinity fluctuation (intertidal zone, estuaries, salt lakes, etc.) are eury-haline and able to adapt to osmotic stress.

A fish egg envelope is composed of several glycoproteins, called zona pellu-cida (ZP) proteins, which are conserved among vertebrate species. Euteleost fishes synthesize ZP proteins in the liver, while otocephalans synthesize them in the growing oocyte. We investigated ZP proteins of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, belonging to Elopomorpha, which diverged earlier than Euteleostei and Otocephala.

Genetic improvement of fish species is considered a priority area for research and development by the government of Viet Nam, particularly in the context of rural development, food security and poverty alleviation. The current proposal has been developed in consultation with Vietnamese staff of participating institutions. The project builds upon the existing collaborative links between Deakin University and the Research Institutes of Aquaculture (RIAs) in Viet Nam.

In order to overcome the limitation of land available for aquaculture in the central costal region of Vietnam and to reduce organic pollution in traditional integrated fish farming, a new method was developed called the ‘improved VAC’ In traditional VAC systems the manure from farm animals is released into fish ponds whereas in the ‘Improved VAC’ the manure is used for earthworm culture. The worm production is then used to feed high value fish species in tanks.
