Fishing catch composition

This study on Palair reservoir gained knowledge on its production potentiality, Icthyofauna and shell fisheries. This will stimulate and initiate action towards conservation of threatened fish resources, judicious exploitation of economically important species and also for further enhancing the ranching of seed in Palair Reservoir and upgrade socio-economic status of fishermen community.

Preliminary studies on conventional estuarine set bag net (CESBN) were carried out during 2016-17 to know the current catch composition. The set bag net is locally fabricated fixed net, normally operated in estuarine region during winter season. The fishing trials were carried out in day time with soaking period of six hours excluding time of setting and hauling. Total of twenty cruises were made for the entire period of study. Results revealed that locally rigged set bag net with 20mm bar mesh size at cod end landed average catch composition of 23.15 kg/haul.

Research on 2,626 individuals of sharks, rays and skates in total of 123 fishing boats were sampled during 2015 to 2016 in Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Binh Thuan provinces. The results identified 77 species of sharks, rays and skates belong to 22 families and 10 orders in Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Binh Thuan provinces. Of these, 57 species were recorded in Ba Ria - Vung Tau and 48 species in Binh Thuan. The families were found in the highest number of species such as Carcharhinidae family with 9 species, Dasyatidae family with 19 species and Rajidae family with 5 species.

The waste from fi sh processing after the fish have been fi lleted can account for as much as 70% of the total catch weight. About 30% of such waste consists of scale and bone. This waste contains numerous valuable organic and inorganic components such as collagen and hydroxyapatite (HA), which have commercial value for use in manufacturing functional foods, cosmetics, and biomedical products. In particular, HA has been widely used as a biocompatible ceramic but mainly for contact with bone tissue, due to its resemblance to mineral bone.

Shrimp exploitation by tropical trawl fisheries generates significant amounts of non-shrimp by-catch. In some countries, by-catch has become an important source of income and contributes to food supply. In others, by-catch of fish, particularly small-sized, is discarded at sea. The capture of juveniles of valuable food fish constitutes a threat to the sustainable production of fish from an area. Extensive removal of non-target fish is also a threat to the biodiversity in a fishing area.
