Circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA, liquid biopsy) is a powerful tool to detect molecular alterations. However, depending on tumor characteristics, biology and anatomic localization, cfDNA detection and analysis may be challenging. Gliomas are enclosed into an anatomic sanctuary, which obstacles the release of cfDNA into the peripheral blood.

Prelabor rupture of membranes (PROM) remains a challenge in obstetrics with serious complications. Quantitative vaginal fluid creatinine concentration is a promising test for diagnosing PROM in resource-limiting settings. However, uncovered factors may affect the diagnostic power of this potential test. We aimed to investigate how clinical factors may affect this diagnostic power.

This article aims to present a numerical analysis of blood flow in the aortic valve using fluid-structure interaction simulation. The finite element method is employed both for fluid and solid domains, and the monolithic scheme is used for the strong fluid-structure interaction coupling to solve well the two challenges: add-mass and large deformation problems.

Until now, two phase fluid models used in CFD simulation give only reasonable results in comparison with experiments for several specific cases. Calibration of necessary parameters in CFD models towards more reasonable results in comparison with those from experiment test is still challenged. This study presents CFD simulation for calculation void distribution along a vertical channel with 7 meter high in ENTEK BM test.

Liquid Chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is the gold-standard approach for androgen analysis in biological fluids, superseding immunoassays in selectivity, particularly at low concentrations. While LC-MS/MS is established for analysis of testosterone and androstenedione, 5αdihydrotestosterone (DHT) presents greater analytical challenges.

Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) is one of the emerging areas of numerical simulation and calculation that many researchers pay more attention in recent years. In general, although a considerable number of FSI studies exist, the numerical prediction of free surface cause tidal in the fields of fluid to gate is challenging.

Mean arterial pressure above 65 mmHg is recommended for critically ill hypotensive patients whereas they do not benefit from supranormal cardiac output values. In this study we investigated if the increase of mean arterial pressure after volume expansion could be predicted by cardiovascular and renal variables.

The finite element method (FEM) has been successful in simulating complex physical systems in science and engineering. A big challenge of using the FEM is how to reduce computation time in large-scale problems. In this paper, we propose combining the FEM and an Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) technique for solving an incompressible fluid flow on unstructured grids.

Validity of mini-fluid challenge for predicting fluid responsiveness following liver transplantation
Mini-fluid challenge is a well tested and effective tool to predict fluid responsiveness under various clinical conditions. However, mini-fluid challenge has never been tested in patients with end-stage liver disease. This study investigated whether infusion of 150 ml albumin 5% can predict fluid responsiveness in cirrhotic patients following liver transplant.

The reliability of pulse pressure variation (PPV) and stroke volume variation (SVV) is controversial under pneumoperitoneum. In addition, the usefulness of these indices is being called into question with the increasing adoption of lung-protective ventilation using low tidal volume (VT) in surgical patients.

The fluid dynamics of occluded arteries depends on many physiological factors and the resulting complexity of the post-stenotic flow field present a challenge for numerical solvers. The primary goal of this paper is to assess the performance of non-commercial and academic CFD solvers that have not been compared previously, for the purpose of stenosed arterial flow modelling.

Although pleural fluid lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels are often used to distinguish between tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) and parapneumonic pleural effusion (PPE), this can be challenging as the LDH level may vary from normal to severely increased in PPE and a significantly elevated ADA is frequently measured in both conditions.

This study aims to evaluate the potential for “Containment Bypass” in VVER/V320 reactor during extended Station Blackout (SBO) scenarios that challenge the tubes by primarily involving a natural circulation of superheated steam inside the piping loop and then induce creep rupture tube failure. Assessments are made of SCDAP/RELAP5 code capabilities for predicting the plant behavior during an SBO event and estimates are made of the uncertainties associated with the SCDAP/RELAP5 predictions for key fluid and components condition and for the SG tube failure margins.

Since a “gold-standard” is missing, diagnosing periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) remains a challenge in orthopedic surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of serum and synovial fluid Procalcitonin (S-PCT and SF-PCT) as a diagnostic parameter and to compare it to the biomarkers recommended in the 2018 Definition of periprosthetic hip and knee infection.

Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) causes substantial symptomatic burden in advanced malignancy. Although pleural fluid cytology is a commonly accepted gold standard of diagnosis, its low diagnostic yield is a challenge for clinicians. The aim of this study was to determine whether pro-cathepsin D can serve as a novel biomarker to discriminate between MPE and benign pleural effusion (BPE).
