Research results show a crowding out effect of FDI inflows, which implies that localities need to focus on the quality of FDI inflows instead of quantity. In addition, the study also considers the impact of internal factors of SMEs, Bayesian regression results show that the size of SMEs, SMEs with e-commerce activities tend to promote investment activities; while the number of years of operation of the business has a negative impact on this activity.

More important findings to be reported is that the spillover effects of FDI appear to be quickly assimilated by workers in the Malaysian manufacturing industries through the "learning effect" as opposed to “technology effect” and that the fast pace is biased towards higher labour productivity. Findings from this study can help the FDI attraction policy to be carried out not only to increase Malaysian labour productivity, but most importantly to ensure the function of FDI transfer of knowledge to labour takes place, which must be based on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Research results confirm that FDI projects with low technology and high energy consumption do not have a good impact on the economy in general and the use of renewable energy in particular. The study also confirms that economic growth and the development of financial markets have a very positive impact on renewable energy consumption. Finally, the study also suggests some policy implications for Vietnam in the case of increasing renewable energy use and sustainable development in the future.

A salient way used to determine those effects is assessing the HDI (Human Development Index) of host country before and after receiving the foreign direct investment. HDI is calculated with regards to three aspects of education, longevity and income. Although, until now, HDI has its own drawbacks that need special attention. Therefore, since 2010, a new measurement called Inequality-adjusted Human Development Index (IHDI) has been created and calculated by United Nations Development Program.

This study evaluates the relationship between foreign direct investment, current account, and economic growth in Vietnam. Using the VECM method, the research results have shown that FDI and current accounts positively affect Vietnam’s economic growth in both the short and long term. The novelty of this paper is that the authors have done the robustness test through the Bayesian stability test. Based on research results, we propose policy implications to minimize the negative effects of FDI inflows and make the most of this capital source for Vietnam's sustainable economic development.
