Chironji, a multipurpose tree provides food, fuel, fodder, timber and medicine to the local community. The species is well known for its kernel which has high nutritive value with rich source of fat, protein and mineral. It is free for collection, as a result of which the local inhabitants, traders and greedy merchants destroy the branches/whole trees during collection of its fruits without bothering about new plantations. This has led to the destruction of Chironji plants in the forests.

We now live in a world where more intense weather, patterns of droughts and floods are becoming commonplace, as are overexploited fish stocks, destroyed forests and dried up rivers. The era of post-war consumerism, where humanity lived in a world rich in resources that were thought boundless, is closing as ecological limits become apparent around the world. We have to face the fact that our consumption of everyday products has a global impact....

Moreover, many areas of sustainable development remain technically ambiguous, making it difficult to plan an effective course of action. For example, the forestry industry has had difficulty defining what constitutes sustainable forest management. Some critics believe that simply replacing trees is not enough, because harvesting destroys the biodiversity of the forest. Clearly, more research will be needed to resolve such technical issues. From a broader perspective, however, it is clearly in the interest of business to operate within a healthy environment and economy.

This book on conservation and improvement of the forest soil is intended for students at agricultural universities who specialise in soil improvement and for all readers who are interested in conservation of the forest environment. The development of human society largely depends on the exploitation of the biosphere. Unfortunately, its resources cannot last forever: some may diminish, others may be irreversibly damaged or destroyed.

By its geographical position, Mexico finds itself under a great variety of natural phenomena which can cause disasters, like earthquakes, eruptions, hurricanes, burning forest, floods and aridity (dryness). In case of disaster, the effects on financial and natural resources are huge and volatile. In Mexico the first risk to transfer is the seismic risk, because although it is the less recurrent, it has the biggest impact on the population and country. For example, an earthquake of magnitude 8.

Forests play an important role in reducing erosion. In Vietnam, destroying natural forests in mountainous areas has caused serious environmental problems for sustainable development. Required forest areas for protection of soils from erosion in Vietnam are defined in this study. An algorithm of defining required forest area for soil erosion prevention is based on a comparison of soil loss prediction and its threshold of 10 ton ha-1yr-1 (soil loss tolerance) within the GIS environment. Soil loss is predicted from rainfall erosivity index, slope, porosity and...

Part memoir, nutritional primer, and political manifesto, this controversial examination exposes the destructive history of agriculture—causing the devastation of prairies and forests, driving countless species extinct, altering the climate, and destroying the topsoil—and asserts that, in order to save the planet, food must come from within living communities. In order for this to happen, the argument champions eating locally and sustainably and encourages those with the resources to grow their own food.

There are also environmental trends that threaten to radically alter the planet, that threaten the lives of many species upon it. including the human species. Each year another 6 million hectares of productive dryland turns into worthless desert. Over three decades, this would amount to an area roughly as large as Saudi Arabia. More than 11 million hectares of forests are destroyed yearly, and this, over three decades, would equal an area about the size of India. Much of this forest is converted to low-grade farmland unable to support the farmers who settle it.
