  • Community-Based Health Insurance is an emerging concept for providing financial protection against the cost of illness and improving access to quality health services for low-income households excluded from formal insurance and taken as a soft option by many countries.

  • Presently, with the increasing number and complexity of available gene expression datasets, the combination of data from multiple microarray studies addressing a similar biological question is gaining importance. The analysis and integration of multiple datasets are expected to yield more reliable and robust results since they are based on a larger number of samples and the effects of the individual study-specific biases are diminished.

  • In this contribution, some textual portions of the Leonardo da Vinci’s work were analyzed with the aim to highlight how, moving from Aristotle and going beyond him, he combines the intermediate positions that, from the Greek philosopher, passing through Buridan, arrive to Newton. This has been performed following a path that passes through the formulation of the principle of causality, the use of the concept of linear relationship (pyramidal law) between cause and effect and the introduction of a duration of the impression (memory) of mechanical systems.

  • In the work of Baader and Distel, a method has been proposed to axiomatize all general concept inclusions (GCIs) expressible in the description logic ℰℒK and valid in a given interpretation ℐ. This provides us with an effective method to learn ℰℒK-ontologies from interpretations. In this work, we want to extend this approach in the direction of handling errors, which might be present in the data-set.

  • A framework for a structured representation of semantic knowledge (e.g. word-senses) has been defined at the IBM Scientific Center of Roma, as part of a project on Italian Text Understanding. This representation, based on the conceptual graphs formalism [SOW84], expresses deep knowledge (pragmatic) on word-senses. The knowledge base data structure is such as to provide easy access by the semantic verification algorithm. This paper discusses some important problem related to the definition of a semantic knowledge base, as depth versus generality, hierarchical ordering of concept types, etc.

  • We argue that because the very concept of computation rests on notions of interpretation, the semantics of natural languages and the semantics of computational formalisms are in the deepest sense the same subject. The attempt to use computational formalisms in aid of an explanation of natural language semantics, therefore, is an enterprise that must be undertaken with particular care. We describe a framework for semantical analysis that we have used in the computational realm, and suggest that it may serve to underwrite computadonally-oriented linguistic ser.antics as well. ...

  • The precise formulation of derivation for treeadjoining grammars has important ramifications for a wide variety of uses of the formalism, from syntactic analysis to semantic interpretation and statistical language modeling. We argue that the definition of tree-adjoining derivation must be reformulated in order to manifest the proper linguistic dependencies in derivations. The particular proposal is both precisely characterizable, through a compilation to linear indexed grammars, and computationally operational, by virtue of an efficient algorithm for recognition and parsing. ...

  • Abstract. The work reported in this article continues investigations in a theoretical framework for Concept Theories based on mathematical logic. The general idea is that the intension of a concept is defined by some equivalence class of theories, whereas the extension is given by the models of the theory. The fact that extensions depend on structures that are necessary to interpret the formulae of the logic, already provides an argument to put more emphasis on the intension.

  • Computational synthetic biology has borrowed methods, concepts, and techniques from systems biology and electrical engineering. Features of tools for the analysis of biochemical networks and the design of electric circuits have been combined to develop new software, where Standard Biological Parts (physically stored at the MIT Registry) have a mathematical description, based on mass action or Hill kinetics, and can be assembled into genetic networks in a visual, “drag & drop” fashion.

  • Research should focus on the development and production of new high-affinity, non-immunoglobulin protein scaffolds as an alternative to antibodies or oligonucleotides. Projects should aim at developing new, efficient and safe therapies by combining high specificity with stable production characteristics. Projects should include preclinical studies, methods for scale-up and GMP as appropriate, should combine academic, clinical and industrial expertise and implement a translational approach towards clinical trials (clinical proof-of-concept and/or phase I/II clinical studies).

  • This chapter collects some fundamental mathematical concepts that we will use in our study of probability and statistics. Most of these concepts should seem familiar, although our presentation of them may be a bit more formal than you have previously encountered. This formalism will be quite useful as we study probability, but it will tend to recede into the background as we progress to the study of statistics.
