Ebook "Catalysis for alternative energy generation" summarizes the role and the possibilities of catalysis in the production of new energy carriers and in the utilization of different energy sources. The main goal of this work is to go beyond those results discussed in recent literature by identifying new developments that may lead to breakthroughs in the production of alternative energy. The book discusses the use of biomass or biomass derived materials as energy sources, hydrogen formation in methanol and ethanol reforming, biodiesel production, and the utilization of biogases.

Microalgal harvesting has still been a challenge to investigators who take their investiment into microalgal production. The cost for microalgal downstream processing is as high as 20% of the total production of biodiesel. Among hundreds of curent methods of biomass harvesting, autoflocculation and bacteria-based aggregation are still being researched and applied in large-scale producuion.

In this study, olive oil residue (OR) biomass was pyrolyzed in the presence of bulk MgO (B-MgO), nano-MgO (N-MgO), bulk ZnO (B-ZnO)), and nano-ZnO (N- ZnO) metal oxides at different temperatures (400, 600, and 800 ºC). Significant results were obtained in terms of synthesis gas formation and CO2 reduction. The efficiency distribution of the products obtained as a result of the metal oxide-based pyrolysis process and the effects of metal oxides were examined in detail.

Results showed that increasing in rotational speed from 0 rpm to 200 rpm converted cellulose-producing cells to non-cellulose-producing ones, leading to a significant decline in BC film formation. The increase in initial inoculum size from 0.01 g/L to 0.1 g/L reduced sugar concentration and surface area of the medium, and therefore inhibiting the formation of film-like cellulosic biomass.

Melia azedarach L. is a multipurpose timber tree that is important in forestry plantations. Genetic modification to improve the growth rate and wood quality is important to produce new cultivars of M. azedarach. In this study, the effects of AtGA20ox gene expression on plant growth, wood formation, and biomass production in transgenic M. azedarach plants were investigated. AtGA20ox was inserted into the binary vector pBI101 under the control of the xylem specific promoter CAD4 and transferred to M. azedarach via Agrobacterium-mediated method.

An experiment was arranged in a factorial completely randomized design with an aim to investigate the effect of short term waterlogging on four popular Khariftomato cultivars of Odisha (Utkal Pallavi, Utkal Dipti, Utkal Kumari and Utkal Pragyan). 45 days old tomato plants were subjected to 15 cm of stagnant water for a period of 0,1,2 and 3 days. High survivability under 1 and 2 days of waterlogging were recorded in U.Kumari of about 80%and 60% respectively because of high adventitious root formation, whereas all the plants died under 3 days of waterlogging due to root hypoxia.

An analysis of the accumulation and distribution of biomass over plant organs allows one to obtain various information about the features of the formation of the crop of the studied genotypes. It characterizes some aspects of photosynthetic activity of plants, donor-acceptor relations between assimilating and consuming organs, potential productivity and attracting ability of fruiting organs and their realization in an economic crop.

India is the largest cotton producing country, covers an area of approximately 36 % area representing about 11.3 million hectares under cotton. It also consumes considerable amount of herbicides and pesticides which are biologically active compounds which may lead to the significant changes in the soil microorganisms. Hence, in this study the herbicides viz., pyrithiobac, pendimethalin and pyrithiobac + quizalofop are sprayed as pre-emergence herbicides and the soil samples were collected at squaring, flowering, boll formation and at harvesting stage.

Protected farming is becoming increasingly popular in different developed and developing countries of the world due to its multifaceted advantages. Study was carried out to evaluate the long term cultivation effect on soil health under poly houses of varying age groups. It was observed that after 3-5 years of cultivation, the soils under the poly houses were deteriorated due to formation of soil acidity, nutrient imbalance and reduction in microbial diversity and enzyme activity.

In the present investigation lentil genotypes; one macrosperma (IPL-406) and the other microsperma (HUL-57) were subjected to drought stress at mid-vegetative, flowerinitiation and pod-formation stages by withholding irrigation. We observed that drought stress of various phenophases significantly decreased shoot length (8% - 22%), leaf area (23% - 52%), CMS (26% - 58%) and phenological developments (0 - 14 DAS) but increased root length (14% - 63%) of plants. Pre anthesis accumulated biomass and nitrogen within the plants parts viz.

Tillage systems can changes in soil organic carbon dynamics and soil microbial biomass by changing aggregate formation and C distribution within the aggregate. However, the effects of tillage method or straw return on soil organic C (SOC) have showed inconsistent results in different soil/climate/ cropping systems. Soil TOC and labile organic C fractions contents were significantly affected by straw returns, and were higher under straw return treatments than non-straw return at three depths.

Soil macro-aggregate turnover and micro-aggregate formation: A mechanism for C sequestration under notillage agriculture had its genesis in attempts to identify and isolate soil organic matter (SOM) fractions that reflect the impacts of climate, soil physiochemical properties and physical disturbance on the soil organic carbon balance. Soil tillage can affect the formation and stability of soil aggregates. The disruption of soil structure weakens soil aggregates to be susceptible to the external forces of water, wind, and traffic instantaneously, and over time.

Aerobic granular sludge has attracted extensive interest of researchers since the 90s due to the advantages of aerobic granules such as good settling ability, high biomass accumulation, being resistant to high loads and being less affected by toxic substances. Studies, however, which have mainly been carried out on synthetic wastewater, cannot fully evaluate the actual ability of aerobic granules.

Mangiferin was isolated from Vietnamese Mangifera indica leaves. Its antimicrobial activities against the oral bacterium Streptococcus mutans GS-5 were evaluated in terms of inhibition of acid production and biofilm formation. The obtained results indicated that mangiferin at the concentration of 0.5 mM clearly inhibited acid production by this organism with a final pH value of 5.2 compared to 3.9 of the control. The reduction in biofilm biomass was found up to 92 % when it was treated with 1.0 mM mangiferin. Thus, mangiferin possesses moderate anticaries activity against S. mutans GS-5.

The presence of chlorine in alternative fuels (e.g., sewage sludge, municipal solid waste or incineration ash, chlorinated biomass,) has both direct and indirect implications on cement kiln emissions and performance. Methods have been developed to properly manage chlorine and its potential implications – but it is important that these implications be recognized and managed. Trace levels of chlorine in feed materials can lead to the formation of acidic gases such as hydrogen chloride (HCl) and hydrogen fluoride (HF) (WBCSD 2002).

Controlling the impact of stress on brewing biomass, predicting yeast activity and ensuring consistent fermentation performance through successive fermentations remain areas of active interest for the brewing industry. To be able to control and perhaps even manipulate yeast activity, it is necessary to identify factors that affect its functionality during fermentation. Genetic stability and integrity are crucial to maintaining predictable performance.
