Formol ether concentration

In this retrospective study, 1872 stool specimens examined from January 2018 to December 2018 by saline and iodine mount were included. The negative samples were further screened using formol ether concentration technique. 114 (16.1%) out of 1872 specimens were positive for parasitic infection.

Intestinal parasitic infections are worldwide endemic and are a major public health problem of concern. The incidence is high in developing countries like India probably due to contaminated food and lack of knowledge. The stool samples from healthy individuals in slum communities of Ghaziabad were collected and examined Macroscopic for the presence adult worms or their body segments and microscopic examination both saline and iodine mounts after Formol-ether concentration technique for presence of cyst and eggs.

Soil transmitted helminths or geohelminths still contribute a major burden to many countries including India. It’s of utmost importance to detect them accurately and timely. Studies on this group of intestinal parasites in adults are rare. Hence, the study explored the usefulness of stool concentration technique and compared them with the direct microscopy for better isolation of the geohelminths in adults. In this study, 254 consecutive stool samples were taken from adult patients of the hospital.
