The expected gain is slow with mild selection while it is rapid with intense selection for the improvement of the traits investigated. The study provided comprehensive and mutually complementary information on the mode of action of gene controlling fresh pod yield and its component traits based on third and fourth degree statistics.

The present investigation was assessed using 235 different F2 individuals, their parents and F1 for characters like plant height, moisture, phenol and chlorophyll. These characters are most important for identification of disease effect and characterization for resistance in plants or genotype. Here, in the present study F2 population was developed from the cross between AT-3 (Solanum lycopersicum L) and IIHR-2101 (Solanum habrochaites L.). Then characters which are mentioned above were studied.

Correlation and presence of genetic interactions was studied using F2 and F3 generations in two cowpea crosses for yield and its component traits. Most of the characters studied were positively skewed and were being governed by several genes indicating quantitative inheritance. Variance, skewness and kurtosis have also indicated that homozygosity has increased from the generation to generation in cowpea crosses. Cross A (C-152 × V-16) was found better than crossB (C-152 × V-57817) in providing high yielding segregants displaying parental diversity.
