French bean seeds

French bean and Pea are an important vegetable crop consumed by human being as green pods and dry seeds due to its high nutritive value as the source of the amino acid, lysine and tryptophan as well as provides valuable dietary protein in the human diet. Considering its use as a vegetable which fits well indifferent cropping systems, there is need for improvement and development of cultivars to specific agro ecological conditions. The knowledge of genetic diversity is an important tool for any breeding programme aimed to exploit hybrid vigour.

The genetic variability and heritability were carried out 66 genotypes of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). A degree of variation was observed for structural and economic traits such as plant height, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and green pod yield per plant. High PCV was observed for pod weight, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant and green pod yield per plant. High GCV was observed for pod weight, number of seeds per plant and green pod yield per plant.

Major problem in agriculture is adequate seed storage due to difficulties in maintaining seed viability and vigour. Fifty French bean genotypes were taken to study the physiological basis of seed deterioration. The seeds were aged for 45°C and 100% RH and physiological parameters were recorded. Moisture content ranged from 9.697 % to 11.246 %. There was increase in moisture content across treatments. The speed of germination differed significantly among the different treatments. The fresh seed lot recorded significantly higher speed of germination.

Garhwal University, Srinagar (Garhwal) with the sole objective to find out the effect of integrated nutrient management on quality seed production of French bean genotype. Aim of the study is to observe the effect of different combinations of organic sources of nutrients viz., FYM, NPK, along with bio-fertilizer on different growth parameters, yield and profitability of French bean cultivar Contender.

Cyanogenesis has been one of the important factors of plant defense mechanism. Many plants liberate HCN after mechanical or chemical injury to their cells or in course of fungal infection. The genetic analysis was carried in a 6x6 half diallel breeding programme of common bean for thirteen yield and yield attributing parameters. Both additive and non-additive genetic components were responsible in the genetic system controlling yield and its component characters. The additive (D) genetic variance was significant for Days to first flowering, Days to fifty per cent flowering, Days to maturity and pod length.

Endophytes are the micro-organism which shares the life long relation with the host. The bacterial endophytes promote the growth directly and indirectly by several mechanisms. Keeping in mind, the present investigation has been carried out to evaluate the bacterial endophytes for their plant growth promotion in vitro condition. Four screened bacterial antagonists viz., SVC 11, BE 1, NGB 21 and M1W1 were evaluated for the germination and the vigour of French bean, brinjal and rapeseed mustard seeds. The bacteria were used individual as well as in consortium mode on the respective seeds.
