  • Blooms of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) occur in freshwater as well as marine environments and cause negative impacts to other organisms via production of natural toxins. Microcystins (MCs), producing by many species of cyanobacteria, cause liver damage, cancer, mental disorder and seriously effects on human health.

  • The results showed that Pb was highly toxic to D. carinata and harmful to freshwater algae Scenedesmus sp. Based on the observed high sensitivity with Pb, D. carinata is a potential bioindicator for the assessment of Pb pollution in the Sai Gon River. While lead-tolerance alga Scenedesmus sp. calls for further investigation on metal uptake capacity and utilization in the Pb contaminated water treatment.

  • Phycodnaviruses are widespread algae-infecting large dsDNA viruses and presently contain six genera: Chlorovirus, Prasinovirus, Prymnesiovirus, Phaeovirus, Coccolithovirus and Raphidovirus. The members in Prasinovirus are identified as marine viruses due to their marine algal hosts, while prasinovirus freshwater relatives remain rarely reported.

  • The presence of Blue-green algae (BGA) toxins in surface water sources and recreation is receiving increasing attention around the world as a public health concern. However, potential risks from exposure to these toxins in contaminated health food products that contain BGA have been largely ignored. Toxic BGA produces compound called microcystin. Fine-grained sediment is a natural and essential component of river systems and plays a major role in the hydrological, geo-morphological and ecological functioning of rivers.

  • Human activities generate vast amounts of wastewater, which contains various toxic metals. Microalgae are able to remove heavy metals from wastewater and accumulate lipid to produce biodiesel. In this study, the abilities to remove copper (Cu) and accumulate lipid of the green algal species Scenedesmus sp. were examined. The microalga Scenedesmus sp. was exposed to Cu concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 10 mg/l under laboratory conditions. The results indicated that Cu inhibited the growth of Scenedesmus sp. at a 96hEC50 of 7.54 mg/l. Furthermore, the highest removal rate was 89.5%.

  • A computer-based database for freshwater algae recorded in Turkey has been established. The first phase of the project involved the selecting of data types available for freshwater algal species occurring in Turkey. Such data were obtained from algal studies previously carried out in various freshwater bodies of the country.
