As Dr. Mark Goulston tells his patients who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), "The fact that you’re still afraid doesn’t mean you’re in any danger. It just takes the will and the way for your heart and soul to accept what the logical part of your mind already knows." In Post-traumatic stress disorder for Dummies, Dr. Goulston helps you find the will and shows you the way.

Despite extensive pharmacological approaches, there is no curative therapy for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) or other types of dementias. While current pharmacological options alleviate some symptoms of AD, they can lead to various adverse effects. Hence, nonpharmacological treatment options for AD are often considered with the assumption that they are safe, effective, and economic in managing patients.

Many patients with cervical disc disease require leave from work, due to long-lasting, complex symptoms, including chronic pain and reduced levels of physical and psychological function. Surgery on a few segmental levels might be expected to resolve disc-specific pain and reduce neurological deficits, but not the non-specific neck pain and the frequent illness.

: Whiplash injury is the most common traffic-related injury affecting thousands of people every year. Conservative treatments have not proven effective in preventing persistent symptoms and disability after whiplash injury. Early established maladaptive pain behaviours within the first weeks after the injury may explain part of the transition from acute to chronic whiplash associated disorder (WAD).

Eliminating the symptoms during treatment of intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is only a temporary solution that does not cure the underlying cause. A biological method to treat this disorder may be possible by the newly discovered nucleus pulposus derived stem cells (NPDCs).

The aim is to increase intracranial control, thereby decreasing symptoms from intracranial progression and a neurological death. There is a rapidly evolving change in the radiation treatment of BMs happening around the world. AWBRT is now being passed over in favour of repeat scanning at regular intervals and more local therapies as more BMs appear radiologically, BMs that may never become symptomatic.

Due to broad range of effects, corticosteroids are frequently used in veterinary practice. Wide ranges of biological effects are mediated via different dose and potency of different glucocorticoids. Intensive short-term glucocorticoid use can decrease the morbidity and mortality of potentially fatal conditions but in long run their use can lead to immunosuppression, duodenal ulceration, pancreatitis, adrenal atrophy, hyperadrenocorticism, glucose intolerance and many more diseases.

An association between hepatitis C virus infection and neuropsychiatric symptoms has been proposed for some years. A variety of studies have been undertaken to assess the nature and severity of these symptoms, which range from fatigue and depression to defects in attention and verbal reasoning. There is evidence of mild neurocognitive impairment in some patients with HCV infection, which is not fully attributable to liver dysfunction or psychosocial factors.

Bone disorders are a group of varied acute and chronic traumatic, degenerative, malignant or congenital conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system. They are prevalent in society and, with an ageing population, the incidence and impact on the population’s health is growing. Severe persisting pain and limited mobility are the major symptoms of the disorder that impair the quality of life in affected patients. Current therapies only partially treat the disorders, offering management of symptoms, or temporary replacement with inert materials.

Based upon the most recent studies, it is now apparent that ozone plays an important role in causing acute health effects, such as heightening asthma symptoms and developing bronchitis symptoms. The role of ozone in producing long-term or chronic effects is less clear, at least from the available epidemiological studies. However, laboratory animal studies suggest that there can be long-term consequences. How to Reduce Ozone Exposure The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recommended that ozone should not exceed 0.08 ppm averaged over an 8-hr period.
