Fruit rot of brinjal
-
Brinjal is one of the important vegetable crops growing in India. Fruit rot brinjal caused by Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum melongenae and Phomopsis vexans is one of the important diseases of brinjal. Hence, in this investigation, critical growth studies were done to understand the pathogen behaviour. The nutritional studies were taken up to know the best medium required for the growth and sporulation of the all three pathogens.

Fruit rot of brinjal caused by Alternaria alternata is an important disease of eggplant inflicting heavy losses. The present investigation was carried out to test the efficacy of fungicides, botanicals and bio-agents in vitro. Among fungicides tested, tebuconazole, difenconazole showed 100 per cent mycelial inhibition of Alternaria alternata.

Phomopsis vexans affected stem and fruit of brinjal crop collected from the field and isolated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) produced white cottony growth, sub-aerial mycelial, circular shaped colony with indistinct zonation and good sporulation. Pigmentation is yellow to dark brown colour. Pycnidia formation takes place after 18 to 20 days which are dark brown in colour and scattered distribution on the media surface.

A survey was conducted in some districts of Upper Brahmaputra Valley Zone of Assam for most prevailing diseases in brinjal during the year 2015-16. Apart from the fruit rot disease of brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) caused by Phomopsis, Phytophthora, Alternaria etc., a new pathogen, Phoma exigua was observed. Initial symptom developed on the fruits as minute, slightly sunken spots, which later produced minute black bodies (pycnidia) scattered and immersed in the infected host tissues.

Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) also known as eggplant is a popular vegetable crop grown worldwide. The most destructive and important disease on brinjal is fruit rot incited by the fungus, Phomopsis vexans (Sacc. & Syd.) Harter. The fruit rot adversely affects the fruit quality and quantity reducing the market value. A total of 20 isolates of P. vexans were obtained from Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya. All the isolates were found pathogenic to brinjal.

A few reviews on control of Phomopsis vexans of brinjal are reported in the literature. This review is added with recent research work, pertaining to practical applications besides the academic importance. The review includes the diseases caused by Phomopsis vexans, yield losses and methods of control. Although control methods like mechanical, chemical, biological and integrated are discussed here, it would be apt to recommend and practice the biological methods of control in the changing climate scenario, drudgery in mechanical methods and to maintain the safe environment.

The brinjal variety Hisar Shyamal (H-8) is popular among farmers in the state of Haryana and neighbouring states of India. It experiences huge losses in fruit yield as it is not resistant to devastating seed borne diseases viz. damping off and fruit rot caused by Phomopsis vexans in addition to other mycoflora. Seed treatment with chemical fungicides like carbendazim is a common practice to control these seed borne diseases of brinjal. However, continuous use of these chemical fungicides are not safe both environmentally and human health point of view.
