In ebook "Mitochondria: The dynamic organelle" the term mitochondrion is derived from Latin, with mitos meaning thread and chondrion meaning granules. Indeed, under the light microscope, mitochondria often appear as rods or granules within the cytoplasm. For decades after initial visualization of mitochondria by light microscopy, mitochondrial function remained clouded.

Ebook "Thermophilic carboxydotrophs and their applications in biotechnology" describes the products produced by carboxydotrophic bacteria and their biotechnological applications. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a widespread pollutant and a hazard to man because of its extremely toxic nature. It is a major component of some industrial gas mixtures and may be derived from coal. The carboxydotrophic bacteria obtain energy and carbon from the oxidation of CO. These organisms may be used to produce new metabolites, and the oxidases from them may be used to produce fuel cells and biosensors for CO.

This paper proposes an integrated power generation system, applying pole-placement technique, fed by three power sources: wind power, solar power, and traditional power which are connected to a commercial power system. Different power sources can be interconnected anywhere on the same power line, leading to flexible system expansion.

Helium plays an important role in determining nuclear fuel performance both in-pile (especially for MOX fuels and those at high burnup) and in storage conditions. Predictive models of helium behaviour are therefore a fundamental element in fuel performance codes.

In this study, conversion of seaweeds into hydrochars was investigated with the aim of obtaining a renewable energy feedstock. The seaweeds Fucus serratus and Alaria esculenta, and a mixture of seaweeds, mainly consisting of Cystoseria sp. and Laurencia sp., were subjected to hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) in subcritical water at three different temperatures: 200, 225, and 250 °C. Fuel characteristics and chemical properties of the derived hydrochars were determined using the standard fuel analysis and spectroscopic methods.

In this paper, the fuel properties of fuel oil, diesel-fuel oil blends, and their performance in the diesel engine are presented and discussed. The most of the fuel properties of fuel oil produced from plastic wastes were on par with diesel fuel. Diesel engine testing unit (3.7 kW, single-cylinder) was used to study the engine performance and emissions during the use of plastic waste derived fuel oil and their blends.

This paper presents summarized findings of utilization of biodiesel with 20% blend (B20) based fish fat in conventional diesel engines. Targeting this, The Mazda WL was used as an object for the application of dual fuels (diesel and biodiesel) conversion. Experimental were tested under standard conditions and part load conditions from 1000 rpm to 3000 rpm, respectively. Exhaust emissions of engine were investigated in this paper.

The rapid population growth, fast agricultural extensions, increased urbanization and industrialization have together stressed the exploration of eco-friendly sustainable and renewable energy resources in meeting the energy needs. Biodiesel is a fuel that comprises mono-alkyl esters of long-chain of fatty acids derived from vegetable oils. Microalgae have tremendous capacity of biosynthesis of TAG compared to other terrestrial crops. The aim of present work was to study effect of various nitrogen sources on the patterns of microalgae growth and the lipid content.

The present work reports on the solution combustion synthesis of CaMoO4 nanoparticles using molybdenum metal powder as the Mo source and citric acid as a fuel. To understand the effect of thermal treatment on the crystallinity, particle size, surface area and photocatalytic degradation at different pH conditions, combustion-derived CaMoO4 nanoparticles were subjected to the calcination at different temperatures in an ambient atmosphere.

Biogas purification using coconut shell based granular activated carbon by pressure swing adsorption
Biogas is one of the most important renewable energy source. Biogas normally contains 55 – 65% methane (CH4) and 45 – 55% carbon dioxide (CO2) and trace amounts of hydrogen sulphide (H2S). Raw biogas cannot be used as vehicle fuel as it contains CO2 and H2S which lowers the calorific value and causes corrosion to the storage vessel respectively. Enriching the biogas by removing CO2 and H2S will significantly improve the quality of biogas. The application of biogas either as cooking fuel or engine fuel chooses the type of purification method.

Biodiesels of vegetable oils are becoming increasingly popular because of their low environmental impact and potential as a green alternative fuel for diesel engine and they would not require significant modification of existing engine hardware. Methyl ester of Pongamia (PB) and Jatropha (JB) were derived through transesterification process. Experimental investigations have been carried out to examine performance and emissions of different blends (1:1, 2:1, and 1:2 by volume) of PB and JB in comparison to diesel.

In an endeavour of exploring alternative energy sources to petroleum based fuels, bioethanol (ethanol derived from biomass) is considered as the most promising renewable fuel because of its potential to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 86% and higher octane (ability to resist compression) rating than gasoline. Present investigation was aimed at bioconversion of paddy straw to ethanol using partially purified fungal cellulases. A variety of soil samples were tested for the presence of cellulolytic fungal strains using enrichment culture technique.

This actual unfolding of events vindicate the position that inflationary pressures stems from a number of factors, including supply side constraint, the global rise in prices of food and oil, the diversion of land for bio-fuel production, loose monetary policy in emerging economies, and the adoption of an expansionary fiscal policy. Hence the policy of across-the-board restriction of derivatives trading in agricultural commodities appears to be unjustifiable, inequitable, and counter-productive.

This paper critically investigates both petroleum diesel and biodiesel emissions from the view point of LTC attaining strategies. Due to a number of differences of physical and chemical properties, petroleum diesel and biodiesel emission characteristics differ a bit under LTC strategies. LTC strategies decrease NOx and PM simultaneously but increase HC and CO emissions. Recent attempts to attain LTC by biodiesel have created a hope for reduced HC and CO emissions. Decreased performance issue during LTC is also being taken care of by latest ideas.

It is of great knowledge nowadays that the use of fossil fuels is responsible for the emission of gases that intensify the greenhouse effect, which threatens the survival of the humankind. The gravity of this fact could be mitigated through the indirect use of solar energy for fuels derived from vegetable that can be planted and cultivated by the world of renewable and non -polisher. Microalgae play an important role in this regard, as they have promising characteristics as potential raw material for the production of biofuels, able to absorb large amounts of CO2 .

Various strategies for biomass derived bio-oil valorization as a renewable feedstock for chemicals and fuels are described. Starting from the role of renewable resources (e.g. biomass, bio-oil) in the future energy and chemical community, an overview on current energy supply situation and the role of biomass and related products are discussed. Later, summary of bio-oil production from biomass and the need for upgrading to further uses is represented.
