An understanding of soil microorganisms as part of soil system and interactions between the diversity of producers and of decomposers, have major consequences on the functioning of agricultural ecosystems. Soil microorganisms control the transformation and mineralization of natural compounds and xenobiotics. The soil micro biota, existing in high density and diversity, rapidly modify the energetic performance and activity rates to changing environmental conditions.

A technique for developing a program in which the solution is expressed in terms of objects -- self- contained entities composed of data and operations on that data. Programmer thinks about and defines the attributes and behavior of objects. Often the objects are modeled after real-world entities. Very different approach than function-based programming (like C).

An overview of the results of our association studies on candi-date genes for human longevity performed in Italian centenarians will be presented. Many genes gave negative results but others showed a positive or negative association with human longevity. Among the last ones a particular attention will be paid to the genes involved in inflammation (IL-6, IL-10, TGFbeta, TLR-4,PPARgamma2), Insulin/IGF-1 signalling pathway and lipid metabolism (Apolipoproteins, CEPT).

Cone snails comprise500 species of venomous molluscs, which have evolved the ability to generate multiple toxins with varied and often exquisite selectivity. One class, the a-conotoxins, is proving to be a powerful tool for the differentiation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). These comprise a large family of complex subtypes, whose significance in physiological functions and pathological conditions is increasingly becoming apparent.

Peptides function as chemical signals between cells of multicellular organ-isms via specific receptors on target cells. Many hormones, neuromodula-tors and growth factors are peptides. Peptide hormones and other biologically active peptides are synthesized as higher molecular weight pre-cursor proteins (pro-hormones), which must undergo post-translational modification to yield the bioactive peptide(s).

The pseudouridine synthase and archaeosine transglycosylase (PUA) domain is a compact and highly conserved RNA-binding motif that is widespread among diverse types of proteins from the three kingdoms of life. Its three-dimensional architecture is well established, and the structures of several PUA–RNA complexes reveal a common RNA recognition sur-face, but also some versatility in the way in which the motif binds to RNA.
