Fungal biomass

Plant biomass is the most abundant carbon source for many fungal species. In the biobased industry fungi, are used to produce lignocellulolytic enzymes to degrade agricultural waste biomass. Here we evaluated if it would be possible to create an Aspergillus nidulans strain that releases, but does not metabolize hexoses from plant biomass.

The study revealed that all the biological agents were found to have potential to increase significant plant growth in terms of number of leaves and plant biomass. The maximum number of leaves per plant was recorded in P. chlamydosporia treated plants which was significantly different from untreated control followed by AM fungi and P. lilacinus. The maximum plant biomass (46%) was recorded in P. chlamydosporia and it was on par with AM fungi.

In the present study, A.flavus and A.fumigatus isolated from pulp and paper mill sludge showed tolerance and accumulation of toxic metals from synthetic medium and paper mill effluent. Effect of heavy metal ions on fungal growth in terms of their biomass (dry weight) was determined and conformed energetic fungal growth after increasing the concentration of Pb2+ and Zn2+ point out the importance of these two fungi for bioremediation.

In the present investigation, an attempt was made to assess the compatibility of six agrochemicals such as Fungicides (Metalaxyl and Tricyclazole), Insecticides (Profenophos and Chloranthraniliprole) and Herbicides (Glyphosate and Atrazine) against five potassium releasing bacterial and two fungal isolates from Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. Compatibility tests indicated that glyphosate has much severe effect on microbial biomass at low, recommended and double doses.

The conclusion drawn from the present study showed an increase in fungal population and fungal feeding nematode population at higher altitudes and reduction in bacterial and actinomycetes population in all the four ecosystems and all the microbial population were highest in post rainy seasons when compared to prerainy, summer and winter seasons.

In an endeavour of exploring alternative energy sources to petroleum based fuels, bioethanol (ethanol derived from biomass) is considered as the most promising renewable fuel because of its potential to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 86% and higher octane (ability to resist compression) rating than gasoline. Present investigation was aimed at bioconversion of paddy straw to ethanol using partially purified fungal cellulases. A variety of soil samples were tested for the presence of cellulolytic fungal strains using enrichment culture technique.

Arbuscular Mycorrhyzae Fungal (AMF) spores were obtained through mass multiplication in maize (in a previous experiment) as a host crop. A study was conducted to test the effectiveness of AMF in rice as host, with three levels of P2O5 (0, 20 and 40 kg/ha) under submerged condition. By reducing levels of P2O5 to 50 % (20 kg/ha) comparable plant biomasses were recorded (P < 0.05) under AMF inoculation with that of highest level of P2O5 (40 kg/ha) with or without AMF inoculation.

Fungi are commonly used in biotechnological and environmental processes through exploitation of their natural catalytic activities. One such fungal activity is to degrade lignocellulosic biomass by producing certain extracellular enzymes. In this study an indigenous white rot fungus SMT 29 isolated from compost sample was used under submerged conditions for lignocellulolytic enzyme production. The process for lignocellulolytic enzyme production was improved by optimizing certain physical and nutritional parameters.

Ten upland rice varieties were grown under aerobic conditions in the fields of IARI, New Delhi and were studied for mycorrhizal status and their growth performance. Rice varieties, Satyabhama and Pyari were shown to have highest response towards mycorrhizal colonization. Percentage of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) root colonization varied between 26.60% and 55.40%. Greater plant nitrogen uptake (110.70 kgha-1 ) and enhanced biomass (54.9%) were observed with increased AMF colonization.

Study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different fertilizer regimes on fungal to bacterial ratio and correlation between the carbon related microbial community and enzyme activities. Result showed that application of bioinoculant with green manure significantly decreased F/B biomass ratio (0.441) which is significantly lower than treatment having sole application of inorganic fertilizer.

Endophytes are microorganisms mostly bacteria and fungi that lives partially or completely its life cycle inside living plant tissue without causing adverse negative symptoms. Endophytes play a major role in structuring shaping processes of plant such as colonization, competition, coexistence and soil nutrient dynamics. Some endophytes promote growth of their host plants by enhancing the host‟s ability to take up nitrogen and phosphorus.

Intracellular pH homeostasis in the filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger was measured in real time by 31P NMR during perfusion in the NMR tube of fungal biomass immobilized in Ca2+-alginate beads. The fungus maintained constant cytoplasmic pH (pHcyt) and vacuolar pH (pHvac) values of 7.6 and 6.2, respectively, when the extracellular pH (pHex) was varied between 1.5 and 7.0 in the presence of citrate. Intracellular metabolism did not collapse until a DpH over the cytoplasmic membrane of 6.6–6.7 was reached (pHex 0.7–0.8).
